Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 stands out as a practical compact SUV that had already settled into a formula buyers trusted: useful space, strong reliability, and a long list of safety equipment. By this point in the fourth generation, Toyota had already added features such as a power liftgate and blind spot monitoring, and the 2016 update brought LED exterior lighting, a redesigned front end, more sound insulation, updated interior styling, and an optional 7.0-inch screen alongside the earlier 6.1-inch unit. Active-safety equipment was also expanded to include available automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings, and adaptive cruise control, although those features were only offered as part of an extra-cost package with the Limited trim.
What makes the 2016 model especially appealing is that it combines that equipment with the RAV4’s reputation for durability and low running costs. The hybrid version is the standout for buyers who want the best balance of performance and efficiency, using a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and electric motors for 194 system horsepower and as little as 7.2 L/100 km combined. It is smoother and slightly quicker than the gas-only version, though it was initially limited to higher trims and used examples tend to cost more. The gas model is less exciting, and the cabin is still fairly plain and noisy, but the RAV4’s straightforward nature, good practicality, and strong reliability make it an easy vehicle to recommend for shoppers who value substance over flair.

I like the way they handle on the open road. The ride is smooth and the accommodations are extremely comfortable. The built in back parking camera is a great feature that comes in handy for numerous driving needs. Mileage isnt bad. The construction is solid. If you have a family and want to keep them protected, I encourage you to do some independent research on the chasis design and the safety features that Toyota puts into their vehicles. I will stick to Toyotas because of everything that goes into them at every level.

Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 a good car?
Yes — the 4.62/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its reliability, fuel efficiency, and comfortable ride, and many also highlight its safety features. The 2016 model’s practical space and everyday usefulness make it a sensible fit if you want a compact SUV that prioritises substance over flair. With 20.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback repeatedly points to reliability, and the model’s reputation for durability and low running costs supports that impression. Buyers also describe it as a vehicle they can count on for everyday use, especially when they want a low-hassle ownership experience. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about dependability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn hard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota RAV4?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 20.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

What is the 2016 Toyota RAV4's resale value?
The current average of $17,867 CAD sits slightly below last year's $18,254 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited if prices stay under pressure. If you plan to sell later, the current trend points to a vehicle that should remain reasonably liquid rather than sharply appreciating. Strong demand for practical, well-liked compact SUVs should still help support values.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 20.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $15,890 CAD, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,867 CAD average.
- It offers practical space and everyday usefulness.
The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if you want the newer update and are comfortable paying the current market average for a well-liked compact SUV. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2015 is the better value play and still delivers the core RAV4 strengths.
