CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Highlander

Summary
With 12 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,497 CAD, 16.7% of 2016 Toyota Highlander listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Highlander 4.93 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Highlander stands out as a practical, comfortable midsize SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and safety. By this generation, Toyota had given the Highlander a more upscale look and interior, and the SUV’s body was reinforced to improve comfort on the road. It also remains a genuinely versatile family vehicle, with up to 2,387 litres of cargo space with the seats folded down, which is one of the best figures in its class.
For 2016, the Highlander’s appeal also came from its mix of standard equipment and available technology. Every Highlander came with an 8-inch touchscreen, USB inputs, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Toyota Safety Sense was standard and included lane-keep assist, lane-departure alerts, and automatic emergency braking. Buyers could also choose from a range of trims and features, including a Nightshade Edition, an XSE trim, and a Platinum package, with higher trims adding items such as heated second-row captain’s chairs, a rear-seat reminder system, a 360-degree camera, and a digital rear-view mirror.
Its strengths are easy to understand: it is spacious, comfortable, and well equipped, and the hybrid version is especially appealing for fuel-conscious shoppers. The main trade-offs are familiar Highlander ones: it is not especially exciting to drive, and the steering is described as numb and uncommunicative. Even so, for buyers who value a smooth ride, strong practicality, and long-term dependability, the 2016 Toyota Highlander makes a compelling case.

Has all the bells and whistles important to a grandmother hauling grandkids to ballgames and everything in between. Smooth as a cadillac ride, great power, and I love the auto liftgate and back up camera. Third row seats are handy to have and fold down flat. Toyota has a great reputation for lasting a long time, and I like to keep my cars many years. Drove a GMC Acadia prior to this car, and I prefer the Toyota.

Coming from a 13 Tucson that blew up on us without warning, this 2016 Toyota Highlander Limited is absolutely stunning. We are very pleased with the fit and finish on the Limited trim, the features are amazing, every single option. It rides so smooth and so quiet, has great power, great fuel economy. It has sharp lines outside, looks great inside, Toyota really did a great job with this vehicle. We are proud to be new members of the Toyota family. We hope for decades of good ownership within Toyota.

How much does the 2016 Toyota Highlander cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,502 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $22,102 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $24,777 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,528 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.26% |
Prices have softened 8.26% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 81 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 4.93/5 user rating points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and the abundance of features, and they also like the powerful V6 engine and smooth ride. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a practical, family-focused midsize SUV with a roomy cabin and everyday usefulness. With 29.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some attractive market availability if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.93/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights reliability, dependability, and a vehicle that feels easy to count on over time. That matters if you want a used SUV that should be straightforward to live with and less likely to create ownership headaches.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about core durability and more about finding one that has been maintained properly and not worn down by heavy family use.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Highlander?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers: there is enough inventory to shop around, but the best-priced examples may move quickly.
- Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 81 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.26% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $22,102 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $22,502 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,528 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the chance of taking a bigger depreciation hit later. The fact that demand is still supported by strong owner satisfaction should help keep this SUV appealing on the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.93/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.26% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.93/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Highlander is a smart choice if you want a comfortable, practical, family-friendly SUV with strong owner approval and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you are price-sensitive, it is worth comparing nearby model years and focusing on the best-priced examples, but the 2016 remains an easy one to recommend when condition, maintenance history, and asking price line up well.
