CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Highlander

Summary
With 12 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,497 CAD, 16.7% of 2016 Toyota Highlander listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Highlander 4.93 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Highlander stands out as a practical, comfortable midsize SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and safety. By this generation, Toyota had given the Highlander a more upscale look and interior, and the SUV’s body was reinforced to improve comfort on the road. It also remains a genuinely versatile family vehicle, with up to 2,387 litres of cargo space with the seats folded down, which is one of the best figures in its class.
For 2016, the Highlander’s appeal also came from its mix of standard equipment and available technology. Every Highlander came with an 8-inch touchscreen, USB inputs, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Toyota Safety Sense was standard and included lane-keep assist, lane-departure alerts, and automatic emergency braking. Buyers could also choose from a range of trims and features, including a Nightshade Edition, an XSE trim, and a Platinum package, with higher trims adding items such as heated second-row captain’s chairs, a rear-seat reminder system, a 360-degree camera, and a digital rear-view mirror.
Its strengths are easy to understand: it is spacious, comfortable, and well equipped, and the hybrid version is especially appealing for fuel-conscious shoppers. The main trade-offs are familiar Highlander ones: it is not especially exciting to drive, and the steering is described as numb and uncommunicative. Even so, for buyers who value a smooth ride, strong practicality, and long-term dependability, the 2016 Toyota Highlander makes a compelling case.

Has all the bells and whistles important to a grandmother hauling grandkids to ballgames and everything in between. Smooth as a cadillac ride, great power, and I love the auto liftgate and back up camera. Third row seats are handy to have and fold down flat. Toyota has a great reputation for lasting a long time, and I like to keep my cars many years. Drove a GMC Acadia prior to this car, and I prefer the Toyota.

Coming from a 13 Tucson that blew up on us without warning, this 2016 Toyota Highlander Limited is absolutely stunning. We are very pleased with the fit and finish on the Limited trim, the features are amazing, every single option. It rides so smooth and so quiet, has great power, great fuel economy. It has sharp lines outside, looks great inside, Toyota really did a great job with this vehicle. We are proud to be new members of the Toyota family. We hope for decades of good ownership within Toyota.

How much does the 2016 Toyota Highlander cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,201 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $22,090 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $24,788 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,624 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.78% |
Prices have softened 5.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 81 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.93/5, which is a strong sign that the 2016 Toyota Highlander delivers on what matters most to used-SUV shoppers.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and the abundance of features it offers. The smooth ride and powerful V6 engine also come up as recurring positives, which fits the Highlander’s role as a practical, comfortable midsize SUV for family use. The overview also points to a spacious, versatile cabin with up to 2,387 litres of cargo space with the seats folded down, so it makes sense if you want a well-rounded SUV that prioritises everyday usability over excitement.
With 33.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.93/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability as one of the Highlander’s biggest strengths, alongside comfort and overall satisfaction. That kind of response suggests you can count on it for dependable daily use, especially if you want a used SUV that is built for long-term ownership rather than short-term thrills.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about finding a well-maintained example with a clean service history.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Highlander?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you a decent chance of finding value if you compare carefully.
- Inventory: There are 81 listings available, so you have enough selection to be choosy without feeling rushed.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.78% compared with last year.
- If you find a listing below $22,090 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $23,201 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,624 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can also affect what a future seller can expect. If you buy at the right price now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. The Highlander’s practical reputation and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, but resale value will still depend on condition, mileage, and maintenance history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.93/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.93/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Highlander is a strong choice if you want a comfortable, practical, and well-liked used SUV with solid market value and a good amount of inventory to compare. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to watch for the lowest-priced listings and move quickly when one lands near the bottom of the range.
