CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Summary
With 68 currently listed for sale and an average price of $36,731 CAD, 29.4% of 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 3.92 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size luxury sedan that blends advanced technology with a deeply polished driving experience. In the W222 generation, Mercedes-Benz gave it a new aluminium hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, while also introducing a surround-view camera system that integrated multi-modal radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centring. The cabin was equally ambitious, with two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, selectable ambient lighting, and a wealth of luxury touches that helped make the car feel especially modern and richly appointed.
What makes the 2016 model particularly appealing is how much substance it offers beneath the luxury. The S-Class was available with a range of powerful engines in this generation, including the S 550’s 4.7-litre twin-turbo V8 with 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, and the S 600’s 5.5-litre V12 with 510 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque. It also offered the S 550e plug-in hybrid in 2016, with 329 system horsepower and 23 kilometres of electric range. Buyers looking for comfort and innovation got features such as magic body control, self-closing doors, a digital instrument cluster, and a power panoramic roof, though many of the best driver-assistance systems were still optional.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is expensive to buy and maintain, and the model’s complexity means repairs can be costly if something goes wrong. Even so, it remains a compelling choice for shoppers who want a used luxury car that delivers standout refinement, strong performance, and a long list of high-end features.

I think this car is trash. They have not been taking good care of it. Missing all the passengers windows buttons. The driver seat seat is broken and the car is filthy inside.

The car had several cosmetic and mechanical issues. There were numerous dents and scratches all over it. It’s definitely been in more than one accident Nomatter what they say in the listing. Then to top it off the reverse camera doesn’t work. Horrible listing!! Beware

How much does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|

| Year-Round Low | $37,014 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $57,734 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $57,734 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −35.89% |
Prices have softened 35.89% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 65 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a strong fit if you want a full-size luxury sedan that prioritises refinement, advanced features, and a polished driving experience, and its user rating of 3.92/5 reflects that balanced appeal. Drivers commonly praise its luxurious feel, advanced amenities, great handling, value for money, and superior performance compared with competitors. If you want a flagship sedan for comfort-focused commuting or long-distance travel, it has the kind of upscale cabin and high-end equipment that make it easy to appreciate. With 29.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a decent chance of finding one priced competitively.
Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a complex full-size luxury sedan with a deeply polished driving experience, advanced technology, and a long list of high-end features. Owners often describe it as luxurious, well equipped, and strong on performance, and some also point to its value for money relative to rivals. At the same time, drivers have noted maintenance costs and electronic components as areas that can become challenging over time. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is less about basic capability and more about whether you are prepared for potentially expensive repairs and upkeep.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare condition, history, and pricing before you commit.
- Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 65 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 35.89% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $37,014 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $37,014 CAD sits slightly below last year's $57,734 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favourable point if you plan to keep the car for a while. For a future seller, it also means resale value may be more sensitive to mileage, condition, and service history than to broad market momentum. If you maintain the car well and keep documentation organised, you will be in a better position to protect value when it is time to sell.
Should I buy a 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 35.89% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a sensible choice if you want the S-Class experience at a lower entry price and you are comfortable shopping selectively for the right example. If you want the best value, focus on well-kept 2016 listings with strong service records; if you are especially price-sensitive, it is also worth comparing nearby years to see whether a cleaner or better-equipped alternative fits your budget more comfortably.
