CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Mazda CX-5
Summary
With 89 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,975 CAD, 32.6% of 2016 Mazda CX-5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Mazda CX-5 4.7 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Mazda CX-5 stands out as a compact SUV that blends sharp styling with genuinely enjoyable road manners. Mazda’s first CX-5 was designed to bring more of a car-like feel to the segment, and this generation’s comparatively low-slung, curvy shape is matched by sprightlier handling than you’d expect from an SUV of the time. It also marked an important step for the brand, using Mazda’s Skyactiv technologies and a design language that gave the CX-5 a distinctive, more premium presence than many mainstream rivals.
For 2016, the CX-5 received minor cosmetic changes inside and out, along with the availability of LED headlights and a city braking system for the first time. The model’s equipment list was solid for the class, with standard air conditioning, cruise control, power side mirrors, and 17-inch alloy wheels, while options included a power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, blind spot monitoring, and a rear-view camera. Buyers also had a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available.
Its appeal is strengthened by the way it balances everyday usability with a more engaging personality than many compact SUVs. Owners commonly praise its handling, comfort, and fuel economy, and the 2016 model’s safety features add to its broad appeal. The main caveat is that the first-generation CX-5 has a weaker reliability reputation than the later version, with engine and electrical issues among the concerns noted for 2016 cars, so shoppers should pay close attention to condition and maintenance history.

I love this car! Good value, it is way better finished than the Honda HR-V I was looking. The car looks amazing, has enough space, good power and doesn’t even consume too much gas

With 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a reasonable chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2016 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable and trouble-free in day-to-day use, with praise for its comfort, handling, and fuel economy. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance records and condition, since long-term ownership risk can rise if prior care was inconsistent.

What is the 2016 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $14,020 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,068 CAD.
That softer pricing can be helpful if you’re buying now, but it also means a future seller may need to price carefully to stay competitive. If the market continues to favour shoppers, resale values may remain under some pressure in the near term. Even so, the CX-5’s strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when you eventually sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 CX-5 makes sense if you want a used compact SUV with strong owner approval, a more engaging driving feel, and pricing that has eased from last year. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby model years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, mileage, and asking price.
