Why it stands out
The 2016 Honda Civic marked a completely new design for the Japanese family car, and it moved the nameplate well beyond its old reputation for being dull and cheap. It kept the Civic’s long-standing appeal as a thriftier, dependable small car, but did so in a package that was meant to be more stylish, refined, and better built. That combination makes it distinctive: it is still a practical compact car, yet it aims to feel more polished and more desirable than before.
What stands out most about the 2016 Honda Civic is how confidently it takes bold chances with small-car fashion and refinement while still succeeding as an everyday car. Owners also praise its smooth drive, reliability, and impressive fuel economy, which reinforces its appeal for buyers who want efficiency without giving up an enjoyable driving experience. A possible drawback is that some reviewers found its height a little awkward, wishing it were easier to get in and out of, but for many shoppers the Civic’s blend of style, quality, and efficiency is exactly what makes it attractive.

The 2016 Honda EX is a wonderful car. The MPG is great combined with the durability of a Honda. I upgraded from a 2002 Civic EX and got my last one up to 199K miles (only performing standard maintenance checkups). 100% worth the value, and I would recommend these cars to anyone.

Love, love, love my Hondas and this one is no different. Drives so smoothly and the hatchback is very handy. Would definitely recommend.

I love the smoothness of the drive. I love the size; I can zip in and out of any parking space. The real deal breaker for me was the left hand lane warning mirror. I do wish it was a little higher from the ground. I do struggle a little bit to get in and out.

Is the 2016 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — 4.86/5. The expert rating is 8/10, and the model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth drive, reliability, and impressive fuel economy. The Civic also stands out for its stylish design and refined feel, which fits its role as a practical compact car that aims to feel more polished and desirable than before.
With its everyday usability and efficiency focus, it suits you well if you want a compact car that feels more upscale without giving up thrift. Good and great deals make up 22.3% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe it as reliable, and the broader feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience. The expert assessment reinforces that impression by highlighting thrift and dependability in a small, fun-to-drive package.
Honda’s safety and convenience package also adds confidence for daily use, and the model’s strong fuel economy supports lower running costs over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about durability and more about finding a well-kept example with the features you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda Civic?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base DX is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more style, refinement, and equipment. The Touring trim brings chrome exterior details, polished two-tone 17-inch alloy wheels, full LED lighting, and a more upscale cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder makes 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque, while the 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder makes 174 hp and 162 lb-ft. A 6-speed manual is standard on DX and LX, while other trims use a CVT.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is available on every sedan trim but the base DX.
- Infotainment: The touchscreen system is quick, and the Civic offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming, HD Radio, SiriusXM, and Garmin navigation. The Touring version also gets a customisable digital instrument panel.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the 1.5-litre turbo and CVT-equipped models at 7.6 L/100 km in the city, 5.5 on the highway, and 6.7 combined. The 2.0-litre gets 7.8/5.8/6.9 with the CVT and 8.8/5.9/7.5 with the manual.
Which 2016 Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2016 Honda Civic is offered in 5 trim levels: DX, LX, EX, EX-T, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- DX: This is the entry point, but it misses out on the Honda Sensing safety package, so it makes the most sense only if you are prioritising the lowest purchase price.
- LX: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it keeps the Civic’s core strengths while staying relatively affordable, and it can be paired with the optional CVT.
- EX: This trim adds more equipment and sits in the middle of the range, making it a sensible step up if you want more comfort and convenience without jumping to turbo power.
- EX-T: This is the first trim with the turbocharged 1.5-litre engine, so it is the one to choose if you want stronger performance and still want a mainstream Civic.
- Touring: This is the most upscale version, with the richest feature set, the most polished appearance, and the most premium cabin presentation.
Honda Sensing is available on every sedan trim but the base DX, so if safety tech matters to you, avoid the entry model.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda Civic?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 22.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 421 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.69% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $14,314 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $14,314 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,675 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. If you buy at the current average, your resale position will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability.
Well-equipped trims and strong maintenance history should help protect value better than a bare-bones example. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic safe?
The 2016 Civic sedan earns Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for frontal crash, side crash, and rollover risk.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. The rearview camera also offers three views, including a top view and an extra-wide shot.
The main safety caveat is that the base DX does not get Honda Sensing, so you will want to step up a trim if advanced driver assistance matters to you.
Should I buy a 2016 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 22.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The all-new redesign brings a more refined cabin, stronger style, and a better-built feel.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $12,779 CAD, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $14,314 CAD average.
- It is a straightforward, well-rounded compact car with strong everyday usability.
The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if you want the more polished, better-equipped Civic and are willing to pay a bit more for the redesign. Consider the 2015 if your priority is lower upfront cost and you are happy with a simpler, more basic ownership experience.
