What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda Civic?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base DX is the only sedan trim without the Honda Sensing safety package, while higher trims add more convenience and upscale touches. The Touring trim stands out with chrome accents, polished two-tone 17-inch alloy wheels, full LED lighting, and a more premium cabin presentation.
• Powertrain: The Civic uses two 4-cylinder engines: a 2.0-litre engine on the lower trims and a 1.5-litre turbo on the higher trims. The turbo model delivers stronger torque and more relaxed highway driving, while the 2.0-litre is the simpler choice.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is available on every sedan trim except the base DX.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen system is quick, and it supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming, HD Radio, SiriusXM, and Garmin navigation. The Touring trim also adds a customizable digital instrument panel.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the 1.5-litre turbo and CVT at 7.6 L/100 km in the city, 5.5 on the highway, and 6.7 combined. The 2.0-litre gets 7.8/5.8/6.9 with the CVT and 8.8/5.9/7.5 with the manual.

Which 2016 Honda Civic trim should I buy?

The 2016 Honda Civic is offered in 5 trim levels: DX, LX, EX, EX-T, Touring.

Here's the short version:

• DX: This is the simplest way into the Civic, but it misses the Honda Sensing safety package that appears on the other sedan trims. It makes sense only if you are focused on the lowest possible entry point.
• LX: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it keeps the Civic affordable while still giving you the core Civic experience and access to the optional CVT. If you want a sensible used buy, start here.
• EX: This trim adds more comfort and convenience while staying on the 2.0-litre engine. It is a good middle ground if you want more equipment without moving up to the turbo models.
• EX-T: This is the first trim with the 1.5-litre turbo engine, so it is the pick if you want stronger performance and better long-distance refinement. It suits buyers who want the more desirable powertrain without going all the way to Touring.
• Touring: This is the most upscale Civic in the lineup, with the richest feature set, the premium cabin treatment, and the most polished presentation. Choose it if you want the most complete version of this generation.

Honda Sensing is available on every sedan trim except the base DX.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda Civic?

• Deal availability: 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 454 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.92% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $14,066 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Honda Civic's resale value?

The current average of $14,066 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,442 CAD.

That softer pricing means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. If you buy at the right price now, you reduce the risk of taking a bigger depreciation hit later. Strong demand for well-kept examples should still help, especially because this model year has a strong reputation with owners.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Honda Civic or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.92% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings a bold redesign that improves refinement, build quality, and safety.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,330 CAD, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $14,066 CAD average.
• It is a practical, well-rounded compact car that does the basics especially well.

The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if you want the more desirable redesign, stronger safety credentials, and a more polished ownership experience. If your priority is saving money above all else, the 2015 is the simpler, lower-cost alternative.

How does the 2016 Honda Civic compare to the 2016 Toyota Corolla?

Our experts score the 2016 Honda Civic 8/10 and the 2016 Toyota Corolla 7.5/10. The Civic is the more polished and desirable choice, with stronger refinement, better safety credentials, and a more upscale feel. The Corolla remains the cheaper new-car alternative, but the Civic offers the better used-car value story here, especially if you want a more engaging drive and richer feature content.
