What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda Civic?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin and exterior presentation improve as you move up the range, with the Touring trim adding chrome accents, polished two-tone 17-inch alloy wheels, full LED lighting, and a more upscale feel. The base trim is the most stripped-back choice, so you should check whether it has the equipment you want before you buy.
• Powertrain: The Civic uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder in the lower trims and a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder in the EX-T and Touring. The turbo engine delivers stronger torque and smoother everyday acceleration, while the 6-speed manual is standard on the DX and LX grades and the CVT is used elsewhere.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is available on every sedan trim but the base DX, so you should confirm whether the car you are considering has this package.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen system is quick, and the Civic offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming, HD Radio, SiriusXM, and Garmin navigation. The Touring version also adds a customizable digital instrument panel.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the 1.5-litre turbo engine and CVT-equipped models at 7.6 L/100 km in the city, 5.5 on the highway, and 6.7 combined. The 2.0-litre engine is rated at 7.8/5.8/6.9 with the CVT and 8.8/5.9/7.5 with the manual.

Which 2016 Honda Civic trim should I buy?

The 2016 Honda Civic is offered in 5 trim levels: DX, LX, EX, EX-T, Touring.

Here's the short version:

• DX: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Civic nameplate and do not need extra convenience or safety equipment.
• LX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the Civic affordable while adding a more complete everyday feature set, and it can also be paired with the CVT.
• EX: This is the better pick if you want a more polished feel and more equipment without jumping all the way to the turbocharged trims.
• EX-T: Choose this if you want the 1.5-litre turbo engine and stronger performance without paying Touring money.
• Touring: This is the most upscale choice, with the richest equipment list, the most premium presentation, and the strongest overall feature content.

Honda Sensing is available on every sedan trim but the base DX, so that is an important safety-package note when you are comparing examples.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda Civic?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 451 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.65% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $14,136 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Honda Civic's resale value?

The current average of $14,136 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,475 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favourable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current softness means you may not see the same short-term appreciation that a tighter market would support. Even so, a Civic with strong equipment and clean history should remain appealing because shoppers continue to value its efficiency, safety, and reputation.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Honda Civic safe?

The 2016 Honda Civic sedan earns five-star ratings from NHTSA for frontal crash, side crash, and rollover risk, and the Civic sedan and coupe were awarded Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is available on every sedan trim but the base DX, so you should verify whether a used example has it. The rearview camera also offers three views, including a top view and an extra-wide shot.

Should I buy a 2016 Honda Civic or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.65% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The all-new redesign brought a major step up in refinement, build quality, and safety.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,435 CAD, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $14,136 CAD average.
• It is a practical, well-rounded compact car that excels at the basics.

The bottom line: If you want the more polished, more desirable Civic with stronger design and safety appeal, the 2016 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less up front and you are happy with a simpler, more basic compact car, the 2015 is the value-focused alternative.
