What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda Civic?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The sedan range runs from DX to Touring, and the higher trims add more upscale presentation, including chrome accents, polished two-tone 17-inch alloy wheels, full LED lighting, and a cleaner, more premium cabin. The base DX is the one trim that cannot be paired with the Honda Sensing safety package.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder makes 158 horsepower and is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a CVT, while higher trims move to a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 174 hp and stronger low-end torque. The turbo model is the one to seek if you want the more relaxed and responsive feel.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is available on every sedan trim except the base DX, so check carefully if those features matter to you.
• Infotainment: The Civic’s touchscreen system is quick, and it supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming, HD Radio, SiriusXM, and Garmin navigation. The Touring trim also adds a digital instrument panel with configurable information displays.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the 1.5-litre turbo and CVT models at 7.6 L/100 km in the city, 5.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 6.7 L/100 km combined. The 2.0-litre gets 7.8/5.8/6.9 L/100 km with the CVT and 8.8/5.9/7.5 L/100 km with the manual.

Which 2016 Honda Civic trim should I buy?

The 2016 Honda Civic is offered in 5 trim levels: DX, LX, EX, EX-T, Touring.

Here's the short version:

• DX: This is the entry point, but it is also the one trim that misses out on the Honda Sensing safety package. If price is your only priority, it gets you into the Civic nameplate, but it is the least compelling choice for most used buyers.
• LX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the Civic’s core strengths while staying closer to the lower end of the range. It also gives you access to the optional CVT, which broadens your choice if you want easier daily driving.
• EX: This trim is the sweet spot if you want a more complete ownership experience without jumping to the turbo models. It adds more equipment and keeps the Civic’s polished feel intact.
• EX-T: This is the trim to target if you want the stronger 1.5-litre turbo engine and a more effortless driving feel. It suits you best if you care about performance and refinement more than simply keeping the purchase price down.
• Touring: This is the most fully equipped Civic in the lineup, with the richest feature set and the most upscale presentation. It makes sense if you want the nicest cabin and the most technology, and you are willing to pay for it.

Honda Sensing is available on every sedan trim except the base DX.

• Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 445 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.45% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $14,006 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Honda Civic's resale value?

The current average of $14,006 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,468 CAD.

That softer pricing can be good news if you are buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values stay under pressure. The Civic’s strong reputation for reliability, fuel economy, and safety should help support demand, though. If you keep the car in good condition and maintain it properly, it should remain appealing to used buyers over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Honda Civic safe?

Honda Sensing is the available driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is available on every sedan trim except the base DX. The rearview camera also offers three views, including a top view and an extra-wide shot.

Should I buy a 2016 Honda Civic or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.45% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 stands out for its bold redesign, stronger refinement, and improved build quality.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,255 CAD, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $14,006 CAD average.
• It is a practical compact car that does the basics especially well.

The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if you want the more polished and desirable Civic with stronger style, refinement, and safety appeal. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value play, especially if you are happy with a simpler, more practical compact car.

How does the 2016 Honda Civic compare to the 2016 Toyota Corolla?

Our experts score the 2016 Honda Civic 8/10 and the 2016 Toyota Corolla 7.5/10. The Civic is the more refined and better-rounded choice, with stronger styling, better safety credentials, and a more upscale feel. The Corolla is cheaper to start, but the Civic offers more power, more listings, and a stronger overall ownership appeal. If you want the more desirable used compact car, the Civic is the better pick.
