Why it stands out
The 2016 Acura MDX stands out as a three-row luxury SUV that blends family practicality with a more polished, driver-focused character than many rivals. By this point in the third generation, Acura had already moved the MDX toward a more technology-rich cabin, and the model’s appeal rested on a comfortable ride, a spacious interior, and a strong reputation for quality. Owners also tend to value its effective safety features and overall performance, which help make it feel like a well-rounded family vehicle rather than just a badge-driven luxury crossover.
What makes the 2016 model especially distinctive is the way it combines useful equipment with a relatively efficient V6 powertrain. The third-generation MDX uses a re-engineered 3.5-litre V6 rated at 290 horsepower, and it was paired with a nine-speed automatic by 2016 to improve fuel economy. Natural Resources Canada rated this version at 11.1 litres per 100 kilometres combined with Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive, which is a respectable figure for a three-row luxury SUV. Acura also continued to add more driver-assist equipment during this generation, including adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, while ventilated seats had become more common than they were on earlier versions.
There are trade-offs, though. The infotainment system was still not especially easy to use, and the third row remained tight. Even so, the 2016 Acura MDX is appealing because it offers a lot of standard content, solid efficiency for its class, and the kind of everyday comfort that makes it easy to live with.

I chose this specific trim (Elite model) for comfort and well… the wide screen entertainment system for my younger kids. For a 8 year old car it drives amazingly. I have driven Hondas, Toyotas Fords but this might be the best I have owned.

How much does the 2016 Acura MDX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,099 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $15,993 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $19,645 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,286 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −16.52% |
Prices have softened 16.52% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 118 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Acura MDX earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, effective safety features, and overall performance, and many also value the spacious interior and family-friendly layout. That fits well if you want a three-row luxury SUV with room for seven and a strong feature set. With 30.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive example.
Is the 2016 Acura MDX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that feels dependable and trouble-free for many shoppers, with praise centred on comfort, safety, and overall value. Some owners do mention transmission shifting concerns, so a careful test drive and service-history review matter if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Acura MDX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 118 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.52% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $15,993 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Acura MDX's resale value?
The current average of $16,099 CAD sits slightly below last year's $19,286 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the MDX easier to buy now but may also limit short-term upside for a future seller. If you plan to resell later, the current softer pricing means your best protection is buying well and keeping the vehicle in strong condition. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Acura MDX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.52% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 MDX is a strong choice if you want a well-equipped three-row luxury SUV with solid owner approval and a softer used-market price. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby years to see whether a similar MDX offers a better deal at the moment.
