Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact SUV that put a stronger emphasis on space, efficiency, and everyday usability. Subaru says the fourth generation debuted for the 2014 model year with major improvements in efficiency, safety, and technology, and it was built on a modified and larger version of its predecessor’s platform with more space. The taller passenger compartment was meant to improve outward visibility, and the body was made more aerodynamic for better efficiency. It was also well received for its interior room and EyeSight technology, though it was not especially engaging to drive.
What makes this Forester especially appealing is the breadth of its powertrain and equipment choices. At launch, it offered a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre boxer four-cylinder with 170 hp and 174 lb-ft, plus a turbocharged 2.0-litre Forester XT with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft. Symmetrical all-wheel drive was standard across the range, and higher-spec models got X-Mode control for the first time, with hill descent control. The trim walk also gave buyers a wide spread of features, from a standard rear-view camera on all but the base model to available touchscreen infotainment, keyless access and start, and a power liftgate.
There are a few caveats to keep in mind. EyeSight was initially only an option on the top-spec Limited model, and the CVT, while generally reliable, requires regular maintenance to ensure longevity. Early 2014-2015 models with the 2.5-litre engine were affected by oil consumption issues, and the turbocharged XT models may require more upkeep than the base engine. Even so, the 2014 Subaru Forester remains distinctive for combining standard AWD, strong practicality, and a more refined, roomier design than many buyers expect from a compact SUV.

Right number of features. Great value. Solid vehicle. Missing? Maybe extras like fancy media, swoopy dashboards and soft armrests. Perfect utility vehicle.

I’m pleased with the car I purchased This model has lots of sleek features! The leather is high quality with beautiful stitching. Touch screen is perfect size. Your eyes don’t have to struggle to see the buttons. Therefore, you tend to keep your eyes on the road more! The lighting is soft & subtle! It makes for a relaxing drive. The 4WD is a must in the mountains! It takes some practice getting used to the steering! It’s truly a different experience than a FWD vehicle. Gas mileage is outstanding! Although, I make checking the oil a multiple time/day must! These are known for oil leaks (especially with high mileage)! When I stop @ the store or put gas in my car, I lift the hood! I keep an extra quart of oil in my trunk! It’s a small inconvenience that can help ensure life for your engine!

Is the 2014 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Subaru Forester earns a 4.58/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its spaciousness, reliability, and enjoyable driving experience, and many also like its smooth ride and great fuel economy. That fits especially well if you want a practical, easy-to-live-with compact SUV with strong visibility and family-friendly usability. With 21.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2014 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.58/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also highlights reliability, with owners describing it as dependable and trouble-free over time. That kind of feedback matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for daily driving and longer ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained well enough to avoid expensive surprises.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Forester?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 133 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.12% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $10,579 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $11,456 CAD sits slightly below last year's $11,825 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can be a mixed signal for future sellers. If you buy at today’s average, you may have less immediate upside than you would have had a year ago. On the other hand, the current price range still shows steady demand for this model year, which can help support resale stability if you keep the vehicle in good condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.58/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.58/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2014 if you want a roomy, practical compact SUV with strong owner approval and some room to negotiate. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2014 remains a sensible choice when you find a well-priced example with solid history.
