Why it stands out
The 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 marked a clear move upmarket for the model, trading the more conservative look of its predecessor for a sleeker exterior and a more premium feel throughout. It still kept the compact-car formula intact, with hatchback and sedan body styles, almost identical dimensions to the previous generation, and a low-slung, sporty appearance. Inside, it leaned into a driver-focused cabin with a stylish layout, while remaining competitively priced.
What helps the 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 stand out is how much equipment it brought for the money. Canadian models were offered with 2.0-litre or 2.5-litre Skyactiv engines, and higher trims could be had with Mazda Connect, a seven-inch display, satellite navigation, a rear-view camera, and satellite/internet radio integration. The car also offered a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, and the Skyactiv engines were praised for revving easily and delivering excellent fuel economy by both real-world and Natural Resources Canada criteria.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 was generally solid, but it is not as reliable as a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic, and premature brake wear is a common issue, especially with pre-facelift cars. The infotainment system can also be glitchy. Even so, its blend of style, value, efficiency, and driver appeal makes it an especially attractive used compact car.

Comfortable and attractive car, with excellent gas mileage and some zip. Only complaints would be the lack of backup camera and dated Bluetooth. Neither are a huge deal. Manual gearbox is pleasant.
