what causes rear side window noise when down

Asked by reedredfearn Oct 20, 2014 at 10:50 AM about the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ Crew Cab LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I roll down either rear side window on my new truck I get a deafing roar or thumping noise that actually hurts my ears right away. I have a rear power sliding window, if I open the this window about half way the noise is acceptable.
Is this normal?

Yes that totally normal. I have the same problem with my ears. The air rushing in has no where to go so it messes up the pressure in the cab. By opening the rear slider the air rushing in has somewhere to go. That's why most mini-vans have rear quarter windows that vent open, to let the air coming in from the front windows out.

It's NOT normal. It's defective. Broken. Poor quality control on the part of Government Motors and the inept dealer miss this obvious defect. Return it ASAP and demand an explanation!

Good morning, Mark. I think this is the first time we heavily disagree on something.

Hi T.A. I interpreted the problem as the noise coming from the mechanism that opens the window, not the wind noise. I had a Jaguar XJ6 that would give you a headache if you opened the sunroof and not a rear window. My bad. I didn't read through the problem and jumped to a conclusion. So how are you doing this morning?

LOL no biggie. I've missread posts myself more than once. Yup, I know what you mean about the "buffering" wind. The mini-vans are horrible unless the rear quarters are open. Instantly feels like Buddy Rich or Neil Peart are soloing on my ear drums. I'm as good as I can be at work on a Monday morning, LOL. At least the sun is shinning and it's actually warm (55)!
