Won't start with key

Asked by Nikkiab80 Apr 21, 2013 at 10:09 PM about the 1989 Honda Prelude 2 Dr Si Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It will not start with key. We have had the starter tested and battery. It has a new
altanater. It has power. We can push start it.

Something is preventing the signal getting to the starter from the key. You should be seeing 12 VDC on the small starter wire when the key is in the start position. Check interlocks like the neutral safety switch and perhaps a after market alarm system. Check the fuses and relays too.

There is a relay in the steering column for the ignition system. My fault was the engine turned over and attempted to fire... but nothing. The relay is cheap as chips. Some people have to traded these wonderful cars in thinking they were unserviceable!?!?
