my 05 neon sxt when check engine light comes on it starts spitting and sputtering but when light goes off runs just fine.. HELP!!!!!!

what code do you get when the CEL comes on?

Check the egr that could be a possibility my girlfriends 98 2 door Plymouth neon was doing the same did a valve cover gasket job 40$ and fifteen minutes and it quit sputtering
