Can I put a 1998 2.0 jetta engine in my 2002 1.8t jetta?

I suppose you "could", but the cost will be absurd. Engine mount locations are different, along with the ECU and transmission, and those would only be the beginning of your problems. If you need a new engine, I think you're far better off finding someone who is selling a 1.8T engine (in your case engine code: AWP) with the correct ECU (depending on if it's auto or manual) and wiring harness. Pay a visit to a wrecker or check out some VW forums. Good luck!
