Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2012 Hyundai Sonata engine seized with driving.
Car has had all scheduled maintenance done and
all recalls including a new engine assembly in the
2016 recall. I’ve only had it a year and put 25-26000
miles on it. It’s at the dealership currently awaiting
approval from Hyundai. I even called Hyundai and
asked them what they plan to do. Anyone else with
high mileage Hyundai that got there engine
replaced do to faulty engine???

A week ago my engine went out driving. I had it towed to the dealership and they are replacing it under warranty. I have a 2014 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T with 105,000 miles on it. They were great about it and even gave me a loaner car. The engine was done today and they said the starter went bad too so they ordered a starter for me and said it will be installed in the morning and my car will be good to go! I got a long block reman engine. Are those just as good as new?

What kind of warranty til Hyundai tell you had on the second, replacement Engine? I am waiting to get the engine replaced on 2017 Sante Fe Sport turbo next week. I was told Hyundai is only offering 12,000 miles or 12 months whichever comes first on the second engine! This is being replaced for the excessive oil consumption. Did you get a second warranty on replacement engine in writing? Thanks

My 2012 sonta went out also we towed it to the dealership and he’s waiting on approval of a new engine I asked him if the engine would be replaced under recall and he said it’ll be under a extended warranty... my question is would I have to come out of pocket for the warranty ? Or was that an offer

My Sante Fe Sport 2017..just got engine replaced. 100,000 mile warranty was now extended to life time warranty extension TXXI. I had approx 92,000 miles on and it started using a lot of oil Went thru 1 - 3000 mile oil consumption test. Engine was replaced free of charge. However, they suggested replacing all hoses and belts with new ones when engine was replaced. That costs me $450.00 Pricey, but you can't get the hoses and belts from anywhere else besides the dealer, I had another mechanic check. They would have used all the old hoses and belts if I had wanted them to, per my dealer. Here is Hyundai customer service no. for this engine problem 1-866-944-7620 PST. 7 - 5 pm. or ask your local dealer or go to HyundaiThetaEngineSettlement.com. Took dealer from Mon to Frid to replace engine, and I got a loaner. Good luck

Dear Guru, My 2011 Hyundai Sonata with 90,000 miles on it just quit on the highway going 65 mph. Most dangerous place you can be. Had it towed. Approved for new engine after checking everything out and did a gear test too. Needs new engine. I did not know about any recall. Mine is a long block. So whoever told you it is only the sort blocks is completely wrong. You need to go back and tell them. I am still waiting for a loaner after 8 days which is unacceptable. Excuse is they are waiting for guy to enter into the system 3 more cars so they can loan them out. Ridiculous. Keep fighting for your engine or reimbursement for what you paid Guru. Crestmont Hyundai in Brunswick Ohio did mine.

my 2013 Sonata just had the engine seize at 111K miles. I wasn't diligent at having the oil changed on time, will they ask for service records showing oil changes? I'm not sure if the seizing was caused by me not maintaining properly or from the issue with the recall.

My 2012 sonata seized while driving, no warranty and Hyundai replaced it. My 2016 veloster literally blew up on me on the highway. Hyundai asked for loan info from the bank and refused to fix the veloster, although it was purchased brand new, no previous owners, under manufacturer warranty and recall, said they would buy it back, which is unfair to me seeing how I was almost finished paying it off, and now its gone, nothing to show for it. Sonata runs fine tho, minor fixes with suspension but its ok. Super upset about my veloster. I’ll never buy another Hyundai as long as i live.

My engine went out 2 months ago. 2012 sonata 122,000 miles. Had it towed three times since dealership couldn't get me an appointment and didn't want the car. It has been with Hyundai for a month and no loaner car. My understanding I will be out of a car for 3 months and maybe a loaner car for 2 weeks. Hyundai is back logged. I believe they are doing it for free. Hopefully they pay the towing fees

I got my car back about a month ago, they had it for two months. they covered my towning and a large portion of my rental car since they didn't have a loaner car to use.

@seanboybike Hyundai just approved my 2011 sonata for a replacement engine. They said it would take two months before it gets to them. How long did it take for Hyundai to reimburse you for a rental? How many miles were on your replacement engine?

@Jaron, it took over a month to get the reimbursement. the new engine is a remanufactured engine that was basically stripped down to the bare block and rebuilt. The way they explained it to me was as if it was a new engine with 0 miles.

@seanboybike Thanks for responding! I'm currently waiting for Hyundai to call me back about the rental car reimbursement (they said 3-5 business days). Does it matter which rental car agency that I get a car from? Did you wait to get a car after they contacted you? If not, did they reimburse you for those days as well? Thanks again!

@Jason, sorry for the slow reply. They told me to just rent one from anywhere that I wanted to, and gave me a daily dollar amount to stay within. But I would imagine it may be different depending on the dealer. I didn't get the rental car until they told me to, and confirmed that it would be covered. I would try to get it in writing, or via email, that way you have a hard copy of the agreement.

I have a 2013 Sonata Hybrid Limited 178,000 miles, I bought it new, all oil change records and the engine blew when my daughter was on I-95 in South Carolina. Towed it to the dealership and 5 months later the dealership and Corporate Hyundai said they will not repair the engine since cars normally do not last that long. The inside of the engine looks brand new. They admitted it is a known defect, some cars they fix and some they refuse is what I was told. My family was planning on buying 3 new cars this year and I can guarantee you they will NOT be a Hyundai. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I just got a 2012 Sonata in December with 136K on it. Since I've owned it, I have taken it to the dealership twice- once for a clock spring replacement and again for the brake pedal stopper. Both covered under extended warranty. During these visits, the mechanics did their multi-point inspection and said everything looked fine. The first time they replaced the valve cover gasket too. Well, last week the engine seized. I was making a left turn and did not see another car coming around a corner, so I goosed it a little. The car didn't even hit 5000 rpm, but the engine bricked up on me. I thought it was just a broken serpentine belt. So now I am in limbo. The dealership doesn't think my odds of being approved for replacement are good because he said that it was about a quart low on oil. I just had it serviced a month ago and they never told me I was low on oil, and it just had the oil changed three months prior. I'm actually scared because I spend $6K on this car out of pocket and if they won't fulfill the warranty, I'm out a car with nothing to start with, Can't afford a car payment. Is there any way to ensure that Hyundai honors this warranty? Engines don't just seize without warning signs when the oil is a little low like that.
