Engine not starting

I stared my car and 5 min later my  check engine light came than my battery
light and radio stopped than car quit , put knew battery in started it than 10
min later same all quit running went to get  alternator came back 2 hrs later it
started up again than quit have not put  alternator in yet should I check
something else before  I put alternator in

Have the old alternator tested to make sure it is bad and not something with the wiring.
