Using a lot of gas but no smell or leak

Asked by jamster0318 Jan 28, 2013 at 03:25 PM about the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2010 Volkswagen Jetta SE. Here's what happened. I had to someplace. I had a little over a quarter tank of gas. I stopped at a gas station and got $10 more of plus grade. The trip up (it's approx a 130 mi. round trip) no problem gas burned at a normal rate. I picked up about 100 lbs. of items, no more than a passenger. On the way back suddenly I was watching the gas guage drop like a rock. Pulled over, could smell no gas near the tank, or under the hood. I barely made it home. Could they have put something other than gas in my car?

Gas gauges are no way accurate. I've seen plenty of them drop fast between 1/4 and 3/4. Do you know how many MPG you usually get? Use a site like GasBuddy.com and Fuelly.com to keep track.

I have to drive a long distance to one of my jobs sometimes. 50 miles one way. The distance is long. at night i get better gas mileage. These cars do well in a cooler environment. it drinks gas during the day. at night it is good on gas. almost double the gas mileage. also the ac is terrible. I guess Germany and Florida are two different places. VW is the biggest car company in the world, wish they would get their acs cooler.
