Ocassional Rough Idle

Try cleaning the Mass Air Flow Sensor with MAF spray cleaner, that you can get at your local parts store. Make sure your air filter is clean also. Replace as necessary.

thanks that was going to be my first approach will try cleaning it see of it happens again. The air filter is was replace about 2 months ago so should be ok.

Also if the check engine light is on, have the vehicle scanned for any trouble codes. The EGR system can cause a rough idle also, but go by the codes if any.

no check engine lite comes on at all. it only happens once in awhile after run for a while if does happen. always starts good getting good gas mileage good power and acceleration

Also like you had asked about the IAC, it does get gummed up there, that is a major vacuum port. You could take it out and clean up real good along with the port it goes into. That IAC makes a seal when it is in-place, I use some sort of lubricant when re-installing the IAC, just have to be careful there.

I just found out from the local ford guy the 2010 explorer w/4.0 sohc XLT does not have an idle air control valve (IAC) so that eliminates that possibility.

I know I found the same thing looking at NAPA and Advance Auto but I looked all over the engine compartment and could not find one on my explorer so called our local ford dealer talked with the counter guy gave him the VIN number and send it doesn't list one for this model. It was manufactured in Canada if that makes any difference.

yea ya got me. i was planning on pulling out the MAF tomorrow and check it; I was also thinking about checking the throttle body just to see it's maybe carbon up.

Yep, a good cleaning on the throttle body helps. Especially on the throttle plate.

Do you know if you need to reset the computer to clear the memory & compactors when just removing and cleaning the throttle body and still use the same one again?

No every thing will be fine, just don't turn the key on, then it would set a code. You can unplug anything and be fine, as long as you do not turn the key on. Just keep the keys out of the ignition.

after further checking and directly from a ford tech manual I found the following info about the IAF on Explorers: "On the 2005 V-6's, there is no IAC valve even though parts stores say there is one. The 2002 and 2003 years have them, and from 2004 thru forward they don't because "they incorporate an electronically controlled throttle, the PCM adjusts idle air by varying the position of the throttle plate "
