battery died 08/ml350 replaced now appears.plus put code reader on vin came out but no codes cant determine where malfunction is

why dont codes come on the scanner reader . car wont star
all that comes is 89,900 miles and malfunction of front right side srs
but when i try to get a read out nothing comes on the codes only on the i/m which
says  oxygen sensor not ready and catallyst not ready what up with this read out

When most code readers do not work check cigarette lighter fuse. Just recently bought one and was trying to get a code from a vehicle and was not working it thought I had gotten hold of a bad code reader. Called tech support and they told me to check the cigarette lighter fuse and that was what it was the fuse was blown replaced fuse and code reader started working.
