Subaru Timing Belt shredded & some Part broke off—How to handle?

Chirping sound yesterday :-(  ... then it stopped—so, I
drove maybe 7/miles to my mechanic.  (Not impressed w.
with local Subaru dealer). A 2006 Wagon, only 77k miles. I
could see the belt looked shredded and off one of
the ‘hubs’. But mechanic said a part had also broken or
broken off & can be hard to get.

My first major repair, but been happy w. maintenance he’s
done. Is this a repair most good mechanics can handle? If
mine doesn’t have the part on order today (Thurs), should
I try to go elsewhere?  A very busy shop. And I’m age-
vulnerable for sure re Covid virus, do need to be socially
distant, do need car,  Advice?  
Also, car did not overheat driving it to the mechanic — is
that a good sign re possible engine damage?

The timing belt or the serpentine belt? Either way stop driving it until it is fixed as you are risking a ruined engine.

Thanks F.O.R. I did drive it to mechanic, temp. gauge, AC, etc. normal), maybe shouldn’t have. A neighbor with expertise, said, my water pump in separate housing, not on the serpentine belt system. Here’s where I am a now ...seemed to be routine serpentine belt replacement (except maybe high price...a broken timing belt ‘d have been worse) BUT ..as I was about to pull out, noticed no AC... and that’s when I was told, “oh... this part was damaged by belt, we repaired it w. liquid electric tape“... (tiny plug to compressor or its wires, behind a guard cover, was apparently dinged.) Guy pushed down on the repaired area, compressor started up, so off I go ... But NOW getting an.awful smell (pesticide like, not maple syrup, or other common smells). Still no explanation for the smell! Have only drivrn it 75 miles.. did not notice sny dmell yesterday. Still, I do worry the compressor or something nearby was ALSO damaged by belt shredding (not just the plug wire) and will cause *trouble* . The smell abated only slowly. Nothing obvious spilled on engine.. (does not look like surface areas were cleaned up. ) I gather if the liquid tape doesn’t hold up, replacing plug part not easy or cheap. And this car only 77k miles but is 14 yrs old (Subaru 2006 LE wagon) probably due real soon for new Timing Belt $$$$ . Guess would pay to replace that & keep car. (Not liking the few wagons & sm.SUVs available now.) But note, car never garaged, ‘lives’ under maple tree :-( ADVICE appreciated!!! .
