My 2003 passat burns oil. Is there something that can be installed to alert me to oil level?

The car has 135,000 kms on it. Since new it has used a considerable amount of oil. Up to a litre every 1500 kms. We purchased the car new and this has always been a problem. VW never helped at all.

if my passat is sitting at an idle all the caution lights are not on but when im driving it and the rpms get wound up the oil light comes on and it tell me to stop the car why is that.

When I use 5w 30 my mechanic said the car is burning it he told me to use 10w 40 but now its like hot weather so he said 20w 50 to use all the time is this right
