I have a 2003 vw passat 1.8T. It puttered out while driving. Lost all oil through somewhere. Oil was underneath, on top of engine and inside of passenger wheel. Will not turn over now.

Added more oil to it and could not
detect a leak anywhere. When trying
to start it it makes a whining sound
like it wants to start but won't kick
over. My neighbor suggested the
timing chain might have went. It has
117000 miles. No issues before this.
Could it be somthing else or if it is
the timing chain is it worth fixing? I
am hesitant on bringing anywhere to
have to pay for them to just start
tearing into the engine

Well if you can find out where the oil came from would be a good start. A place to start is what is the highest place the oil reached. Tho im willing to bet your oil pump is probably gone and you possibly blew a hole in your oil pan do your self a favor and get some car ramps and roll around under it with a flash light. Check all the seals on the oil pan and check the right side of your engine for signs of a head seal blown out or a crank seal gone.
