Toyota Camry 2003 le All power and Engine Shuts off

Asked by Deric Mar 16, 2017 at 11:43 PM about the 2003 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This has happened twice so far. The first time, the radio shut off and then I
realized the engine and the power had shut off, while I was accelerating. This
was on a very flat plane, but I was able to brake, and then put it in park and
was immediately able to start the car.

Today, I was at a steep hill waiting for a stoplight, and when I hit the gas. The
car's engine turned off along with the power. I started to roll backwards, but
reacted quick enough to hit the brakes. Then  I put the car in park, and it was
able to start immediately again.

Any helpful thoughts or recommendations?

Thank you!

What engine? Any warning lights on or flashing when the engine is running?

It's a 2.4 L 4-cylinder There aren't any warning lights. I don't know if this helps, but the car radio's power cuts out every so often, and it forgets it's preset settings.

Suggest a Battery Service and test be performed. Also under hood ground points be cleaned and tightened. Do you notice any white powdery looking gunk on the battery terninals?

No, haven't had to do anything like that. I haven't had time to do the battery service and test, but I will soon. I was stopped at the same hill, and the power in the car flashed and the battery light was on. Thank you for the advice! I'll check back if they can't figure out anything else.

Hi! Thank you for keeping up with this. I got the battery checked and they said the battery was bad, so I got a new 5 year battery. The car started, but it had a low rpm and died. The battery person said he saw that on toyotas, and just put the car in park and hit the gas. He said that would reset the computer. Since then everything seems fine. Thank you very much for the help!
