2003 F150 Trouble starting

Asked by Nbriggs21 Nov 09, 2016 at 08:29 PM about the 2003 Ford F-150 XL Extended Cab 4WD SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2003 F150 4.6L has been having trouble
starting the past couple weeks. It cranks nice and
hard and usually starts but every once in a while it
takes a couple tries (only in the mornings or after
it's been sitting for a while). Once I get it started, I
can turn it off and it will fire right back up. Fuel
pump and filter were replaced in May, timing
chains were also replaced in May (timing chain
guards broke and caused the chain to jump). Any
ideas what could cause this? I don't want it to get
worse and leave me stranded.

Replace air filter and clean throttle body with throttle body cleaner and add fuel injector cleaner to gas tank.

My guess is that your fuel pump is getting ready to die. I own a 2002 F150 and I am basing this advice on my experience. One thing you can try is banging on the bottom of the tank with the key on, if you hear the fuel pump start up then it is time for a new one!

Since you replace the pump recently I would check the electrical connection.

Thanks. I'll clean the air filter, MAF and TBS and post an update in the next couple weeks.
