How do you know when a catalytic converters on a 2008, 118,000 miesneeds
to be replaced?

You would get a lot of O2 codes thrown, rough idle, might even detect a sulfurous odor (rotten eggs). 118K miles seems premature for a bad cat, unless you have a lot of idle hours or drove with a mistuned engine for a long time.
