1972 vw super beetle won't start

I have a 1972 vw super beetle. I bought the car
about 3 months a go, but after the first month our
house caught fire and I didn't start it up for 2
months, I also removed the gas tank to paint it.
Every time I try to start it up it seems like it's not
getting any gas. I checked the fuel filter and it is
barely full, and the other end of the hose drips gas
when removed from the fuel pump. Any ideas on
what the problem is and how to fix it?

It is an old car- but the technology is basic, so you got a car which will lend itself to learning about repairs- you took the gas tank out- so you are already doing some wrenching- idk- my guess is that the old VW might need a complete restoration on the fuel system- for starters- make sure the tank is clean, fuel lines and hoses- mount a nice electric pump by the gas tank- etc. etc. if you have not restored a car before, you will learn that everything needs to be replaced before it works correctly- the beauty of the old car is that it is possible to replace everything-
