73 Vw super beetle won't start and shoots Smoke from Carb please help

I recently replaced the generator out of my
73 super beetle and cleaned the Carb but
now when I go to start it acts like it wants to
take off but shoots smoke out of the Carb
any ideas

I had the same problem and was told it could be a bad carburetor or my timing was off, haven't checked yet . also you could call up jbugs California pacific or look them up online. they are very helpful. hope this helps you out
