I've got a 74 vw beetle-just rebuilt engine. Works great in neutral but when take off and shift to second gear it pops a few times and won't get up to speed. Ivery set timing at 7' BTDC-CARB IS NEW.

If it pops through the carburetor timing is set to far advanced. If it through the exhaust to too far restarted. A service manual should have this information.
