1977 chevy Impala

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought this car about a year ago. So far I have replaced
the spark plus, valve covers, battery and did a oil change.
The car passed smog (California) and everything was fine
until a week ago. The car doesn't start right away it takes a
while for it to crank. I have to tap the gas a few times so it
can start. Once it starts and is on a thick cloud of smoke
comes out of the exhaust, the car tends to jump slightly
while idling and at night with the head lights it tends to dim
with the the rhythm of the jump. I'm not sure what's going
on o am noob when it comes down to cars and want to get
her running right. Any support, ideas or directions are
welcome.

This car is carbureted, when cold before you turn the switch you should push the throttle down several times to set the "choke" then take your foot off the throttle and hit the switch, the car should start and run at a preset fast idle after a minute or so kick the throttle again to slow it down some smoke at start up is normall. At night the lights will dim as the engine rpm drops off because the alternator is rotating slower thus producing less current, you may need a choke, fast and curb idle adjustment.I hope this helps you
