Car won’t start, loud screeching noise?

Asked by Guru95D6GR Dec 28, 2020 at 01:08 PM about the 2003 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I try to start my 2003 Ford Explorer,
sometimes instead of starting normally it will
instead scream at me. I don't know how to describe
it, it’s kind of like a high pitched drill sound. just
very loud machinery. It only does this sometimes,
and oftentimes if I’m persistent and sit there trying
and trying, eventually the car will start. But it can
make me late and I’m sure what ever is happening
is terrible for the car. Help please if you’ve ever
heard of this I can’t find anything online.

The serpentine belt connecting all the engine driven accessories is probably slipping causing the noise. Check it for both tightness and slippage due to age/wear.
