Reviews Summary

The NX is the compact crossover SUV of the Lexus lineup. It sits between the Lexus UX and Lexus RX in size and price, and it competes with small luxury crossovers like the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Genesis GV70, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Volvo XC60. This second-generation version arrived for the 2022 model year and receives minimal updates for 2026. The previously offered NX 250 base model is gone, but Lexus made some changes to the lineup to make the hybrid and plug-in hybrid NX models more affordable. The Lexus NX is assembled in Canada at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario.

Verdict: The NX offers good value in hybrid form, but it otherwise doesn’t feel like a true luxury vehicle.

Reviews Summary

The Sportage is big enough for family use, but not so large that it's unwieldy or difficult to park in the city or in an owner's garage. It's packed with useful technology and boasts bold styling that stands out in a sea of similarly shaped crossovers. In hybrid form, it’s also more efficient than the gas-only version.

Verdict: The 2026 Kia Sportage is sized right among compact crossover SUVs. It strikes an intriguing balance of roominess, comfort, and efficiency that ought to win over plenty of drivers.

2026 Lexus NX

9/10

2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid

7/10

The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid distinguished itself from its predecessor with a series of design updates, particularly at the front. It featured sharp, angular headlights and a blocky grille that seamlessly integrated into a modern fascia. The SUV's dramatic curves led to wide, aggressive haunches over the rear wheels, while upward-slanted lines framed the LED taillights. Kia's "Opposites United" design philosophy resulted in a distinctive crossover that stood out in its class. Inside, the Sportage Hybrid boasted a stylish interior with a 12.3-inch touchscreen display as part of Kia’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit. High-quality plastics and harmonious textures and colours enhanced the cabin's appeal. The SX trim offered unique interior finishes, including Saturn Black and Carmine Red options, with synthetic leather standard across the lineup.

The 2026 Lexus NX, despite being a few years into its second generation, maintained a fresh appearance with well-integrated styling elements. It featured chunky fenders, LED daytime running lights, and a spindle grille that, while controversial, was balanced by the placement of headlights and air intakes. The NX's design was more refined than some German competitors, with key elements carried over from the previous generation. For 2026, Lexus offered the NX in various powertrains, including non-hybrid, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid models, with multiple package options. The F Sport packages added performance features like adaptive dampers and black 20-inch wheels. While Lexus's bold styling didn't deter sales, the base NX 350's interior didn't quite meet luxury expectations, with the F Sport 3 package offering sport seats and aluminum pedals that didn't significantly elevate the experience.

2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid

5/10

The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid was equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine paired with a 47.7-kilowatt electric motor, delivering a combined output of 232 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. This represented a five-horsepower increase over the previous model year. In Canada, the Sportage Hybrid featured standard all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission, with a towing capacity of 900 kilograms. The electric motor provided ample low-end torque for city driving, though highway passing power was less impressive due to the transmission's delayed downshifts. The Sportage Hybrid's suspension prioritized comfort, effectively absorbing bumps and minimizing road noise. With 21 centimetres of ground clearance and a new Terrain Mode button, the Sportage Hybrid was well-suited for light off-road adventures.

The 2026 Lexus NX offered a range of powertrain options, but the standard NX 350 F Sport 3's turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, was underwhelming. The engine, shared with the Toyota Tacoma, felt more suited to a pickup truck, and the eight-speed automatic transmission was sluggish. Lexus claimed a 7.0-second zero to 100 km/h time, but achieving this was challenging. The NX 350h hybrid and NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid models appeared more promising, with the latter boasting 304 horsepower and a 6.1-second zero to 100 km/h time. However, the NX's chassis tuning left much to be desired, with firm dampers and lifeless steering detracting from the driving experience. Despite Lexus's reputation for comfort, the NX struggled with ride quality and cabin noise at highway speeds.

Form and function

2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid

6/10

The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid, as a compact SUV, offered a wheelbase over five centimetres longer than the Honda CR-V's, placing it in direct competition with the CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Inside, the Sportage Hybrid comfortably accommodated four adults, with reasonable legroom in both rows. The SX test car's front seats were particularly comfortable, and the cabin featured numerous storage cubbies. Cargo capacity reached 2,087 litres with the rear seats folded and 1,119 litres with them in place. The Sportage Hybrid's cargo space compared favourably to the CR-V's, though Kia's touch-sensitive controls for common functions were unnecessarily complex.

The 2026 Lexus NX offered competitive passenger space among compact luxury SUVs, though with some compromises. Rear-seat headroom was comparable to rivals, but legroom was slightly less generous. Front-seat legroom was on par with Audi and Mercedes, though the Acura RDX offered more. The NX's front seats felt constrained, with limited headroom and hindered visibility due to the deep dashboard and large mirrors. Cargo space measured 643 litres with the rear seats up and 1,328 litres with them folded, trailing competitors. The NX's towing capacity was also modest at 907 kilograms. The F Sport 3 package's sport seats provided comfort but were unnecessary given the NX's performance limitations.

Technology

2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid

7/10

The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid came standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The SX trim added a 10-inch head-up display. All Sportage Hybrid models included Kia Connect, a subscription-based package offering remote entry and climate control via a smartwatch, as well as cloud-based mapping. The SX trim featured a Harman Kardon surround sound system with 400 watts and eight speakers, delivering excellent audio quality.

The 2026 Lexus NX featured a standard 9.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, with a 14-inch display available in higher packages. All models included a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and six USB ports. Wireless device charging was standard, while a head-up display and 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system were exclusive to premium packages. Data connectivity packages offered cloud-based navigation, digital key functionality, and emergency assistance. The 14-inch touchscreen was well-placed but had room for improvement, with awkward touch sliders for fan speed adjustment. The voice recognition system was helpful but limited in functionality.

Safety

2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid

8/10

The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid came equipped with a range of driver-assist features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The top SX trim added advanced features like a Blind Spot View Monitor, Evasive Steering Assist, additional parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, and Highway Driving Assist 2. While the 2026 model hadn't been rated by safety organizations, the previous version received high marks from both the IIHS and NHTSA.

The 2026 Lexus NX offered comprehensive driver-assist features through the standard Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 suite, which included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centring assist, and traffic sign recognition. Additional features like park assist, front cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree camera system were available. The NX received a 2025 Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS, though it missed the highest award due to an "Acceptable" score in one crash test. NHTSA ratings were not available at the time of writing.
