As one ascended the trim levels to the Denali, the deliberate use of chrome became even more apparent. The Denali's front was almost entirely constructed of chrome, with a vast, multi-dimensional grille that resembled an industrial-sized cheese grater. This design choice gave the vehicle a unique look and a commanding presence, essential for a full-size luxury SUV. In contrast, the 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid maintained a more subdued exterior, with minimal changes for the year, including a new Cypress Green paint colour. The Highlander Hybrid's design was over-styled, with exaggerated forms and scowling headlights. Inside, the cabin continued this theme with oversized elements like large air vents and a giant 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The multi-layered dashboard's mismatched textures and tones, combined with reflections from the display and black plastic trim, made the interior visually overwhelming. Despite these design choices, the Highlander Hybrid was quiet on the road, with Toyota focusing on reducing cabin noise. However, the interior quality was questionable, with primary controls feeling inexpensive and storage areas unlined, leading to potential scraping and rattling sounds during drives. The Highlander Hybrid was more about practicality than luxury, designed for those who prioritize reliability and safety over engaging driving experiences.
