2025 Porsche Cayenne Reviews Summary

Verdict: Even the base model Cayenne delivers an agile driving experience, but those willing to dig deep into their bank account for one of Porsche’s more expensive Cayenne models are rewarded with a spirited drive like no other. The competition here is stiff, in the form of other German SUVs like the Audi Q8, BMW X5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE, and their performance variants. However, the Cayenne is not here to lose.

2026 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas continues as VW’s North American-market three-row SUV (a two-row Atlas Cross Sport is also available, but we’ll cover that separately), and it’s largely unchanged from its substantial 2024 refresh. What remains, however, is a vehicle that impresses with its upscale appearance and genuinely spacious interior. A stiff ride and poorly executed technology will fight and frustrate you every step of the way, but the Atlas will nonetheless make you look good.

Verdict: The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas delivers on its core promise of style and space at a non-luxury price point. If you can tolerate its sub-par ride quality and maddening infotainment system—or if you simply plan to rely on Apple CarPlay and ignore the native tech—this handsome three-row SUV offers compelling value for shoppers prioritizing looks and space.

Look and feel

2025 Porsche Cayenne

9/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne presented itself as a versatile SUV, available in both a standard SUV form with a squared-off rear end and a sporty Cayenne Coupe variant. The GTS trim level, which was the focus of our review, featured distinctive high gloss black trim, a unique front fascia with larger air intakes, and tinted headlights. Red brake calipers were visible through 21-inch wheels in anthracite grey, and the Cayenne Coupe boasted an adaptive rear spoiler. Inside, the Cayenne offered extensive customization options, from the colour of the cabin to the trim and seat belts, allowing owners to create a unique vehicle. The cabin was well-organized, with mechanical controls for essential features and a dashboard-mounted shifter toggle that freed up storage space.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas, particularly in the Execline trim, exuded an upscale appearance, bordering on luxury crossover territory. Starting with the base Comfortline trim, the Atlas featured full-LED lighting, power-adjustable heated side mirrors, and a sculpted silhouette. The Peak Edition added rugged elements like all-terrain tires and blackout trim pieces. The Execline trim stood out with 21-inch two-tone alloy wheels and R-Line exterior design elements. Inside, the Atlas offered quilted diamond-pattern leather seats, metallic accents, and artificial wood trim, creating a warm and inviting environment. The 12-inch touchscreen promised a high-tech experience, although its functionality left something to be desired. Despite some functional shortcomings, the Atlas maintained an upscale appearance, rivaling even the Mazda CX-90 in terms of premium styling.

Performance

2025 Porsche Cayenne

9/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

5/10

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne offered a range of engine options, all capable of delivering impressive performance. The base model featured a 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 348 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. For those seeking more power, the Cayenne S offered a V8 engine with 468 hp, while the Turbo GT boasted 650 hp, though it was only available as a coupe. Plug-in hybrid options were also available, with up to 729 hp for peak performance. The GTS trim, with its twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine, delivered 493 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque, providing a thrilling driving experience. The Cayenne GTS could accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 275 km/h. The vehicle's steering, suspension, and braking systems contributed to its agile and athletic performance, making it a joy to drive on both backroads and highways.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine, producing 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive in Canada, provided a refined and efficient driving experience. While the Atlas didn't feel particularly quick from a stop, its wide torque band made it feel capable once underway. The vehicle's Drive Mode Select system offered various driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, Sport, Custom, and Snow, allowing drivers to tailor the driving experience to their preferences. The Atlas achieved a fuel consumption rate of 10.7 litres per 100 kilometres during testing, slightly better than the estimated 11 L/100 km combined rating for the Execline trim. The 4Motion AWD system performed well in various weather conditions, although the Atlas was not designed for serious off-roading. The vehicle's ride quality, however, was compromised by the large 21-inch wheels, resulting in an uncomfortable amount of vibration and harshness on imperfect pavement.

Form and function

2025 Porsche Cayenne

7/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne offered a la carte customization options, with the base model featuring standard eight-way power-adjustable seats, two-zone climate control, and ambient lighting. Higher trims, like the GTS, added features such as a GT Sport steering wheel and Race-Tex headliner. The Cayenne could accommodate five passengers comfortably, with ample headroom in the second row. The vehicle's towing capacity was impressive, with the ability to tow up to 3,500 kilograms and accommodate over 635 kilograms of payload. However, cargo space was slightly smaller than some competitors, with 772 litres behind the second row and 1,708 litres with the seats folded down in the standard model.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas excelled in accommodating passengers and cargo. The Execline trim featured heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats, with supportive seating for long drives. The second row offered captain's chairs that folded flat and tipped forward for easy access to the third row. The third-row seats provided decent leg support, making them suitable for taller passengers. Cargo capacity was a strong point for the Atlas, with 583 litres of space behind the third row, 1,572 litres with the third row folded, and a total of 2,735 litres of cargo space. This made the Atlas a practical choice for those needing to transport people and belongings comfortably.

Technology

2025 Porsche Cayenne

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

4/10

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne featured a curved 12.6-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen display running the Porsche Communication Management system. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Spotify, Apple Music, satellite radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. An optional 10.9-inch passenger screen allowed for navigation and media control. The Cayenne also offered a head-up display, night-vision assist, and four high-speed USB-C charging ports, along with a cooled wireless charging area.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas came standard with a 12-inch touchscreen running VW's MIB3 operating system, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless charging. The Highline trim added a Harman Kardon 12-speaker audio system and a 360-degree surround-view camera system, while the Execline included a head-up display. Despite its impressive features on paper, the MIB3 system was frustrating to use, with a complex interface and touch-sensitive controls that were difficult to operate at night. The Harman Kardon audio system and Digital Cockpit Pro were highlights, but the overall tech experience was hindered by usability issues.

Safety

2025 Porsche Cayenne

7/10

2026 Volkswagen Atlas

8/10

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne offered standard safety features such as parking sensors, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring. However, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-departure warning were optional. The Cayenne had not been rated by the NHTSA or IIHS for safety.

The 2026 Volkswagen Atlas earned a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS for 2025. The Atlas featured Volkswagen's IQ.Drive suite of driver assistance features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and Travel Assist. These systems performed well during testing, providing reliable assistance in various driving conditions.
