2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Reviews Summary

The Volkswagen ID.4 electric car is still relatively new to the marketplace (it debuted for the 2021 model year) but VW is already making some important updates to keep it competitive and fulfil goals set when this compact electric SUV first launched.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 adds a new base model and a smaller 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack alongside the carryover 82-kWh to increase affordability. VW will also begin sourcing cars for its North American dealerships from the same Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory that builds the gasoline-powered Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The automaker has been discussing this since the ID.4 was unveiled, but at first cars for our market came from Zwickau, Germany.

The 2023 ID.4 retains single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain options, but gets revised exterior and interior styling, some software changes, and a few more standard tech features and driver aids.

The new-for-2023 base model is dubbed simply ID.4, slotting below the ID.4 Pro and ID.4 Pro AWD. We recently spent a day on a test drive with the U.S. equivalent of the ID.4 Pro AWD model, along with a shorter drive in a base ID.4 model.

2023 Subaru Forester Reviews Summary

Sheer practicality defines the 2023 Subaru Forester, a compact crossover SUV where form follows function without fail. In turn, the 2023 Forester possesses the power to make your life easier in nearly every respect. From its standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and generous ground clearance to its roomy interior and sizable cargo hold, it effortlessly tackles most daily tasks with a shrug.

This year, Subaru continues to refine the Forester, adding next-generation EyeSight safety features and an improved standard infotainment system. Unfortunately, though, the Forester still lacks a turbocharged engine option or an electrified drivetrain.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

2023 Subaru Forester

5/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 featured subtle styling updates, including a gloss black trim on the front bumper and a more squared-off rear bumper design aimed at improving aerodynamics. New wheel designs and colours were introduced, and the rear VW logo was illuminated. Despite these changes, the ID.4 maintained a distinct EV appearance, lacking the traditional SUV profile and ground clearance, which could be a drawback for buyers seeking classic SUV aesthetics. The ID.4 was built on VW’s MEB platform, designed specifically for EVs, offering a modular approach similar to the MQB platform used in other VW models. Inside, the ID.4 carried over the minimalist and quality-focused design from VW’s gasoline models, with leatherette upholstery and recycled fibre inserts as standard features.

The 2023 Subaru Forester retained its familiar design, reminiscent of previous models, especially in the Cascade Green Silica paint. Available in multiple trims, the Forester ranged in price from $30,995 to $41,595, excluding destination charges. The Premier trim, tested here, featured 18-inch alloy wheels and satin chrome exterior trim, enhancing its appearance. The Forester’s design was functional, with robust roof rails and a high static-weight rating, allowing for versatile use. Inside, the Premier trim offered brown leather, exposed stitching, and metallic accents, maintaining a traditional Subaru design with analog gauges and an 8-inch touchscreen. The interior was practical, with a mix of buttons and knobs for easy control, though the overall appearance was busy.

Performance

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

2023 Subaru Forester

7/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 offered two battery options: a new 62-kWh pack for the base model with RWD and an 82-kWh pack for the Pro model, available with RWD or AWD. The single-motor RWD models delivered 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque, while the dual-motor AWD version increased output to 295 hp and 339 lb-ft, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The smaller battery reduced curb weight by 109 kg, enhancing acceleration and handling. Despite its comfortable ride, the ID.4 exhibited body roll on twisty roads, limiting its sporty appeal. Regenerative braking was present but did not support one-pedal driving, offering a more traditional driving experience.

The 2023 Subaru Forester was powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and standard AWD. The CVT mimicked a traditional automatic with eight programmed ratios, and the SI-Drive system offered a Sport mode for improved response. The Forester featured X-Mode off-road traction control, with additional settings for the Sport trim and above. The Forester Premier handled challenging weather conditions with ease, showcasing its capability. Despite the engine’s adequate performance, the Forester’s driving dynamics were impressive, with responsive steering, effective brakes, and excellent suspension tuning. However, a turbocharged engine or hybrid option would have been welcome for better performance and efficiency.

Form and function

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

7/10

2023 Subaru Forester

8/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 provided ample interior space, surpassing other affordable EVs in front and rear legroom and headroom. It offered 858 litres of cargo space with the rear seats up and 1,818 litres with them folded, making it practical for an EV. The ID.4 also had a towing capacity of 1,000 kg for RWD models and 1,225 kg for AWD models. Interior updates for 2023 included a conventional lid for the centre console and improved phone storage, along with available three-zone climate control.

The 2023 Subaru Forester prioritized function over form, offering features like a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated elements in the Touring trim. Higher trims added StarTex or genuine leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and power-adjustable passenger seats. The Forester excelled in visibility, with high seating and large windows, making it easy to drive and park. However, the panoramic sunroof’s lack of tint and the rear seats’ comfort were minor drawbacks. The Forester provided 762 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,957 litres with them folded, offering average capacity for its class.

Technology

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

2023 Subaru Forester

7/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 came standard with a 12.0-inch touchscreen, featuring software updates for improved responsiveness. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with the ID.Cockpit digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system offered sharp graphics and natural-language voice recognition, though the haptic touchpads on the dashboard and steering wheel were less intuitive. The ID.Light feature provided ambient lighting and navigation assistance, though it was easily overlooked.

The 2023 Subaru Forester featured a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Starlink connected services. An 8-inch touchscreen with navigation and a Harman Kardon audio system was available. The Forester’s user interface was straightforward, with separate climate controls and easy-to-use knobs and buttons. However, the voice-recognition system was unreliable, making smartphone integration essential for navigation and other functions.

Safety

9/10

2023 Subaru Forester

8/10

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with top scores in frontal and side crash tests. The 2022 model’s IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating suggested strong safety performance, though the 2023 ratings were pending. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and VW’s Travel Assist 2.0, with new additions like Park Assist Plus and a 360-degree camera system.

The 2023 Subaru Forester introduced an updated EyeSight system with improved cameras and software. Adaptive cruise control was standard, and higher trims added Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester’s safety features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System on top trims. The Forester earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, with some areas for improvement, while the NHTSA awarded it five stars overall.
