2023 Nissan Versa Reviews SummaryIt’s getting hard to find a basic subcompact sedan, but Nissan is keeping the faith. The Nissan Versa returned to the Canadian line-up in the 2021 model year after a six-year hiatus, slotting below the Sentra in the lineup. The most recent redesign was just a year earlier, for the 2020 model year. For 2023, the Versa gets a handful of updates, including freshened styling and more available tech features. In addition to the Versa S, the lineup includes SV and SR models; we tested the latter for this review. Since the Versa has been on sale, the ranks of subcompact cars have thinned considerably. The Chevrolet Sonic, the Ford Fiesta, the Honda Fit, the Hyundai Accent, and the Toyota Yaris are no longer sold in North America. That leaves the Kia Rio and the Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback as the Versa’s main competitors, and the Rio is on its way out of Canada for 2024 as well. But, as is always the case in this market segment, shoppers must also consider whether to buy a new car like the Versa or a potentially better-equipped used car for similar money.
2024 Cadillac CT5 Reviews SummaryThe CT5 is Cadillac’s midsize luxury sedan, positioned above the CT4 and competing against the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It carries over unchanged for 2024, but is due for a refresh for the 2025 model year. Verdict: The CT5 is a multitalented luxury sedan that’s also a decent value.

The 2023 Nissan Versa adopted the design language of its larger siblings, the Sentra and Altima, giving it a more upscale appearance. The floating roof effect, created by a strip of black trim on the rear roof pillar, and the prominent V-Motion grille were key design elements that made the Versa instantly recognizable as a modern Nissan. The sedan's sleek profile and wide stance, along with the nicely sized wheels, contributed to its traditional sedan look rather than that of an econobox. The interior, while primarily plastic, showcased creativity with large round air vents and an elaborate dashboard, providing character and a sense of quality fit and finish.
In contrast, the 2024 Cadillac CT5, which succeeded the bold Cadillac CTS, dialed back on the intensity of its predecessor's styling. The CT5 featured a distinctive front fascia with a confident sneer and a stretched wheelbase that lent it a stately appearance. The roof's subtle fastback silhouette added a touch of elegance. Despite being older than some competitors, the CT5 maintained a contemporary look with a cleaner design. The interior, however, seemed to be a mix of various car elements, lacking cohesion. While the features like massaging front seats added a luxury feel, the overall cabin design fell short of the luxury expectations set by its exterior.

The 2023 Nissan Versa was equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine producing 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). While not thrilling, the engine provided satisfactory performance for daily driving, and the CVT was responsive. The Versa's handling was characterized by noticeable body roll but also impressive grip, making it feel more substantial than typical subcompact stereotypes. The ride was comfortable, with the suspension effectively absorbing bumps and keeping cabin noise levels low.
The 2024 Cadillac CT5 offered multiple powertrain options, starting with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A more powerful 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 was available, delivering 335 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, with rear-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional. The CT5-V variant featured a tuned V6 with 360 horsepower, while the CT5-V Blackwing boasted a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 with 668 horsepower. The CT5 Premium Luxury model, with its twin-turbo V6, offered a balanced blend of luxury and sportiness, achieving a 0 to 96 km/h time of 5.1 seconds for AWD models. The ride quality leaned towards a sports sedan feel, with low interior noise levels enhancing driving comfort.
The 2023 Nissan Versa, available only as a four-door sedan, offered a respectable 416 litres of trunk space in the base S trim and 425 litres in the SV and SR trims. While the rear seat space was slightly less than competitors like the Kia Rio, the front row felt spacious with good visibility. The centre console storage was limited, but the overall interior layout was practical, with power windows standard across the range.
The 2024 Cadillac CT5 provided comparable passenger space to its luxury rivals, with more front headroom than the Audi A6 and outgoing Mercedes E-Class. It offered the most legroom in both rows among its competitors, although the trunk space was limited to 337 litres. The driving position was well-designed, with adjustable seats and steering columns across different trims. The centre console was efficiently organized, offering decent storage space and well-placed controls.
The 2023 Nissan Versa featured a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and Siri Eyes Free voice control. Higher trims added Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a wireless phone charging pad. The top SR trim included an 8-inch touchscreen and a six-speaker audio system. While the tech features were comprehensive for an economy car, the graphics and screen sizes felt outdated.
The 2024 Cadillac CT5 came with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Technology Package added a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display. The system's smooth operation and user-friendly interface marked a significant improvement over previous Cadillac systems. However, the CT5 lacked the flashy tech features of some competitors, focusing instead on usability.
The 2023 Nissan Versa impressed with its standard driver-assist features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and high beam assist. The SV trim added blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The NHTSA awarded the Versa a five-star overall safety rating, although the IIHS had not updated its ratings.
The 2024 Cadillac CT5 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with top marks in all crash tests. Standard safety features included forward-collision warning, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional features like adaptive cruise control and Super Cruise, GM's hands-free driver-assist system, enhanced the CT5's safety credentials.
