2023 Cadillac CT5 Reviews Summary

Remember the Cadillac CTS? The name stood for Cadillac Touring Sedan, and the original CTS marked a dramatic turning point for Cadillac design and engineering. Then, the automotive executive who came up with the Audi and Infiniti alphanumeric nameplates applied similar logic when he arrived for a short stint at Cadillac. That’s when the CTS became the CT5, which doesn’t stand for anything except "midsize Cadillac sedan." That’s too bad, because this car would have been remembered as the best CTS yet. Instead, people are like: “C-T what now?”

2023 Honda Accord Hybrid Reviews Summary

The 2023 Honda Accord midsize sedan enters a new model year refreshed and rejuvenated, if not exactly revolutionized in comparison to the previous version of Honda’s long-running and highly regarded family sedan. With this, the 11th-generation of the new Accord, Honda wisely didn’t attempt to rewrite the rulebook in how the company set about improving one of its most important and popular models.

In Canada, the new 2023 Accord Hybrid is available in two trims: Sport Hybrid, and Touring Hybrid. Pricing for the Accord Hybrid ranges from $41,000 to just shy of $45,000 not including an $1,830 destination charge, taxes, and other fees. This starting MSRP is higher than its key hybridized five-seat sedan rival, the Toyota Camry, and on par with the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. That’s before digging into the dizzying array of small and midsize SUVs available with hybrid powertrains, including the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and even Honda’s own CR-V.

Does the new Honda Accord Hybrid make enough of a splash to be worthy of consideration in such crowded and hotly contested markets? After a shorter drive at the start of the year, a week-long test drive this summer provided the answers.

Look and feel

2023 Cadillac CT5

7/10

2023 Honda Accord Hybrid

7/10

The 2023 Cadillac CT5-V, with its unique light grey metallic Rift colour and 19-inch aluminum wheels, stood out on Canadian roads dominated by Asian and German luxury cars. Its design, featuring a mix of black, body colour, chrome, and wheel-like finishes, was meticulously crafted, drawing attention and admiration, particularly from male onlookers. Despite its sporty appeal, the CT5-V's interior quality revealed a mix of high-end materials and less impressive details, such as hard plastic panels and unlined storage areas, which somewhat diminished its luxury feel.

In contrast, the 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid exuded a near-luxury appearance, often mistaken for a more expensive sedan. Its sleek design, reminiscent of the Audi A7, featured a longer body, redesigned front grille, and updated LED lighting, giving it a refined look. The Accord's interior was equally impressive, with a new dashboard design and a standard digital instrument display. The Touring trim boasted a 12.3-inch touchscreen and advanced features like Amazon Alexa and wireless connectivity, enhancing its upscale appeal.

Performance

2023 Cadillac CT5

7/10

2023 Honda Accord Hybrid

7/10

The 2023 Cadillac CT5-V was powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 engine, delivering 360 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. This engine outperformed the base engines of its German rivals but fell short compared to the BMW M340i and Mercedes-AMG C 43. The CT5-V could accelerate to 100 km/h in about five seconds, though it felt slower than it sounded. Its 10-speed automatic transmission, paired with rear-wheel drive, offered various driving modes, including Tour, Sport, and Track, allowing drivers to tailor the car's performance to their preferences. However, the CT5-V's loud exhaust note and lack of refinement on imperfect surfaces detracted from its overall driving experience.

The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid, equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, produced 204 horsepower, sent to the front wheels via a CVT. While it lacked the sheer acceleration of some rivals, the Accord Hybrid excelled in smoothness and efficiency, seamlessly switching between electric and gas power. Its suspension effectively absorbed road imperfections, providing a comfortable ride. The Accord's regenerative braking system, with six levels of regen, offered a customizable driving experience, making it easy for drivers to adapt to regenerative braking.

Form and function

2023 Honda Accord Hybrid

8/10

The 2023 Cadillac CT5-V, built on the same platform as the smaller CT4 and Chevrolet Camaro, offered a spacious and comfortable interior. The front seats, wrapped in artificial leather, were 18-way power-adjustable, with optional genuine leather and ventilated seats. However, the rear seats were less accessible due to the door frame design. The CT5-V's trunk, with a capacity of 337 litres, was small and narrow, though it offered hidden storage and a foldable rear seat for longer items.

The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid's cabin, inspired by the Civic and CR-V, featured a honeycomb mesh trim that concealed the air vents, adding to its upscale feel. The Touring trim included heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a generous 473-litre trunk. The Accord's front seats provided excellent support, while the rear seats offered ample legroom and shoulder room, though headroom was limited by the roofline. The trunk's low load floor made it easy to access, accommodating bulky cargo with ease.

Technology

2023 Cadillac CT5

9/10

2023 Honda Accord Hybrid

8/10

The 2023 Cadillac CT5-V's technology was user-friendly, with a 12-inch digital instrumentation and 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Cadillac User Experience (CUE) system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Bose 15-speaker audio system, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. While the CT5-V lacked an embedded navigation system, it offered optional upgrades like a head-up display and a surround-view camera. However, future models would no longer support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, opting for subscription-based services instead.

The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid featured a 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital gauges, with the Touring trim offering advanced tech like wireless connectivity, Google Built-in, and a head-up display. The Accord's infotainment system was intuitive, with physical volume and climate control buttons. The Touring trim also included a 12-speaker Bose audio system, HD radio, and multiple USB ports, enhancing its tech appeal.

The CT5-V added features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. The optional Super Cruise 1 Package offered hands-free driving assistance on approved highways, though drivers needed to remain attentive.

The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid boasted a comprehensive suite of safety features, including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. The Accord Hybrid Touring added parking sensors and a head-up display. The Accord earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, scoring "Good" in crash tests and other safety evaluations.
