2023 Kia Telluride Reviews Summary

Kia can barely keep up with demand for the Telluride, and its dealers and customers have told the company not to change a single thing, so you’d think it unnecessary for the automaker to invest a single penny upgrading the popular three-row crossover SUV.

Kia would disagree.

This year, the 2023 Telluride gets minor styling changes, new technologies, and some off-roading attitude in the form of new X-Line and X-Pro trim levels. We headed to San Antonio, Texas, to sample the Telluride’s new kit. And we remain impressed with this excellent family-size sport-ute.

2023 BMW X1 Reviews Summary

The all-new, third-generation X1 subcompact crossover is zippy and fun enough to be worthy of the distinction, but with new capability and plenty of cargo space, it’s bringing the utility, too.

2023 BMW X1

8/10

The 2023 Kia Telluride X-Line and X-Pro models showcased a refreshed design with updated front and rear styling, new headlights and taillights, and a selection of new wheel designs. The exterior colour palette expanded to include Midnight Lake Blue, Dawning Red, and Jungle Green, while the interior offered new hues like Terracotta, Navy, and Sage Green. The X-Line model replaced the Nightfall Edition, featuring a raised suspension, unique grille design, and black 20-inch wheels, while the X-Pro model added exclusive 18-inch wheels and all-terrain tires, enhancing its off-road appeal. Inside, the Telluride boasted a digital instrumentation panel and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, both housed under a curved 24-inch glass panel, giving the SUV a modern edge. Minor interior updates included new colours, trim changes, and a redesigned steering wheel, with embossed trim names on the front seatbacks of the X-Line and X-Pro models.

The 2023 BMW X1 retained its recognizable design while incorporating a more robust and refined appearance. The larger, squarer kidney grille and flush door handles contributed to its modern look, complemented by standard LED headlights and taillights. The exterior colour options expanded to include dynamic choices like Blue Bay Lagoon and Utah Orange. The X1 offered 18-inch wheels as standard, with optional upgrades to 19-inch or 20-inch wheels wrapped in performance tires. The xLine design added silver accents and high-gloss body cladding, while the M Sport Package featured body-coloured elements and Shadowline exterior features. Inside, the X1's cabin exuded a premium feel with the BMW Curved Display, SensaTec 2.0 seat coverings, and a sophisticated centre armrest. The M Sport Package added sport seats and an M leather steering wheel, while the Premium Essential Package included features like a panoramic moonroof and wireless device charging.

Performance

2023 Kia Telluride

9/10

2023 BMW X1

9/10

The 2023 Kia Telluride maintained its mechanical prowess with a 3.8-litre V6 engine producing 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Drivers could choose from Eco, Comfort, Smart, Sport, and Snow driving modes, with an AWD system featuring a low-speed Lock setting for power distribution. The Telluride X-Line averaged 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres, while the X-Pro returned 11.5 L/100 km, including off-roading. The Telluride's suspension was raised by 10 mm, improving ground clearance and off-road performance. The X-Pro model offered 18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, and an improved cooling system, increasing towing capacity to 2,495 kilograms. The Telluride excelled in off-road conditions, showcasing its AWD Lock mode, ground clearance, and stability. On highways, it provided a smooth ride with minimal wind noise, though the steering in Sport mode felt overly firm.

The 2023 BMW X1 received a power boost with a 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder engine producing 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. The X1's towing capacity reached 1,587 kilograms, a first for the model. An all-new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission replaced the previous eight-speed automatic, enhancing the driving experience. The Adaptive M Suspension and damping systems improved comfort and stability, with minimal body roll even in cornering. The X1's fuel economy was rated at 9.6 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 7.0 on the highway, and 8.4 combined, with Premium fuel recommended. Visibility was adequate, and the ride felt agile, akin to a smaller hatchback rather than a crossover.

Form and function

2023 BMW X1

9/10

The 2023 Kia Telluride offered seating for seven or eight passengers, with premium Nappa leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and heated and ventilated front- and second-row captain’s chairs. The interior was spacious, with a power lumbar stabilization system for long trips. The second row featured manual side-window sunshades, USB ports, and storage pockets. A button on the second-row captain’s chairs facilitated access to the third-row seating area, which was more comfortable than many competitors. The Telluride provided ample storage space, with a smart power tailgate and generous cargo capacity: 601 litres behind the third row, 1,304 litres with the third row folded, and 2,455 litres with both rear rows down.

The 2023 BMW X1's larger dimensions resulted in increased interior space, with impressive headroom of 1,069 mm in the front row and 998 mm in the rear. Front-row legroom measured 1,026 mm, while back-row legroom was 939 mm. Cargo space was superior to competitors, offering 727 litres behind the rear seats and 1,619 litres with them folded. Heated seats were part of the Premium Essential Package, which also included a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, and wireless device charging. The wireless charging pad featured a clever clasp to secure the phone, ensuring it remained in place even on twisty roads.

The 2023 Kia Telluride came standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Kia Connect services. The voice recognition system performed well, though climate control adjustments required manual input. Over-the-air updates kept the system current, and Bluetooth supported pairing two devices simultaneously. The Telluride included Driver Talk and Quiet Mode, a wireless phone charger, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. Digital-key technology allowed smartphones or smartwatches to function as the vehicle's key. A Full Display rear-view mirror and an optional head-up display with a 10-inch viewing area were also available. The Leading Vehicle Departure Alert system was a standout feature, notifying drivers when traffic ahead began moving.

The 2023 BMW X1 featured the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8, integrating a 10.7-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch driver information display. The system was responsive, though cluttered with apps and sub-menus. Voice commands worked well for climate control and the panoramic moonroof, but the navigation system required specific inputs. The touchscreen functioned smoothly, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity were seamless. BMW’s Live Cockpit Plus was standard, with Digital Cockpit Professional available in the Premium Enhanced Package, adding a head-up display and augmented reality navigation. The X1 included four USB-C ports and an optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The vehicle operated with a start/stop button and a toggle-style gear selector, with automatic parking brake activation on slopes.

Advanced Highway Drive Assist added a Lane Change Assist function. The Telluride included automatic high-beam headlights, a driver attention warning system, and a Rear Occupant Alert system. The IIHS rated the 2023 Telluride as a Top Safety Pick+.

BMW’s Driving Assistant Professional was available, featuring speed limit assist, traffic-jam assistant, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control with stop & go.
