2022 Toyota Corolla Reviews Summary

The Toyota Corolla needs no introduction. With 12 generations spanning over five decades of production, the Corolla is the bestselling nameplate in automotive history. And it continues to be a popular choice for new car buyers looking for a reliable and sensible compact car, competing against other established names like the Honda Civic, the Hyundai Elantra, the Kia Forte, the Nissan Sentra, the Subaru Impreza, and the Volkswagen Jetta for sales.

The only significant change for 2022 is the addition of two new colours: Ruby Flare Pearl and Wind Chill Pearl. What hasn’t changed is the number of other choices buyers get. Toyota offers sedan and hatchback body styles, manual and automatic transmissions, and multiple powertrain options—including a hybrid. The Corolla Cross SUV also launched for 2022 but, while it shares a basic platform with the Corolla sedan and hatch, it’s effectively a different vehicle.

Finally, you get the expected array of trim levels. The Corolla sedan is available in L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE grades, plus Apex Edition and Nightshade Edition versions of SE and XSE, with more limited options for the Corolla hatchback and hybrid (both of which will be covered separately). For this review, we tested the Apex Edition sedan, which is based on the SE grade (US model shown). The Apex is the sportiest Corolla variant, at least until the GR Corolla hot hatchback arrives for the 2023 model year.

2022 Subaru WRX Reviews Summary

The model year 2022 WRX delivers a cocktail of performance and all-weather practicality that remains unmatched at its price point. Although the introduction of Subaru’s 2.4-litre engine doesn’t result in a massive power bump for the WRX, the car still impresses—particularly in the handling department.

2022 Toyota Corolla

7/10

2022 Subaru WRX

8/10

The 2022 Toyota Corolla, part of the current generation since 2019, aimed to shed its "boring" image with bold styling, featuring scowling LED headlights and a wide grille. While it couldn't quite match the eccentricity of the Hyundai Elantra or the cohesive design of the Honda Civic, it offered distinct styling elements across trims. The SE and XSE models sported an aggressive front fascia, while the Nightshade Edition added blacked-out trim. The Apex Edition, with its subtle body kit and 18-inch wheels, stood out in Cement Grey, exuding a "Fast and Furious" vibe. Despite its sporty exterior, the interior remained simple, with standard Toyota fit and finish, though the piano black plastic trim was prone to dust and smudges.

In contrast, the 2022 Subaru WRX presented a more subtle exterior, despite being 5 centimetres wider than its predecessor. The front end featured a small hexagonal grille and signature hood scoop, while the side profile was streamlined with black plastic cladding designed to improve aerodynamics. The rear showcased flared fenders and quad tailpipes, with taillights designed to resemble illuminated magma. The WRX's interior saw significant improvements, with better fit and finish, a D-shaped steering wheel, and sporty accents like aluminum-alloy pedal covers and red-stitched black cloth seats, distinguishing it from other Subaru models.

Performance

2022 Toyota Corolla

7/10

2022 Subaru WRX

6/10

The 2022 Toyota Corolla offered two engine options. The L, LE, and XLE models featured a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine with 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. The SE and XSE models, including the Apex Edition, boasted a 2.0-litre engine producing 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. The Apex Edition's sport exhaust and unique suspension enhanced its handling, though it lacked significant power upgrades. The manual transmission paired well with the Apex Edition, offering a sportier drive, but the ride was notably stiffer.

The 2022 Subaru WRX, distinct from the Impreza, introduced a 2.4-litre turbocharged engine, delivering 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Despite a slight power increase, it felt underwhelming compared to competitors like the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The WRX came standard with all-wheel drive and offered a choice between a six-speed manual and a CVT. The manual transmission was precise and enjoyable, while the new suspension, part of the Subaru Global Platform, improved ride quality and reduced body roll, making it adept on challenging roads.

Form and function

2022 Toyota Corolla

2022 Subaru WRX

7/10

The 2022 Toyota Corolla provided decent headroom and legroom, similar to the Honda Civic, but suffered from limited forward visibility due to its deep dashboard. The driver's seat adjustments were beneficial, though long-legged drivers might find knee space lacking. The Corolla's 371-litre cargo space was smaller than competitors, but it included a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. Interior storage was limited, with a thin centre console and small phone tray.

The 2022 Subaru WRX, while lacking a hatchback option, increased its cargo capacity to 354 litres, expandable with a 60/40 split-fold rear seat. The sport seats were comfortable and supportive, with various upholstery options across trims. The WRX's standard all-wheel drive and practical features made it a compelling choice for those seeking a performance-focused yet practical vehicle.

Technology

2022 Toyota Corolla

6/10

2022 Subaru WRX

8/10

The 2022 Toyota Corolla's infotainment system lagged behind competitors, with a standard 7-inch touchscreen on the base model and an 8-inch screen on higher trims. While it included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a six-speaker audio system, the interface felt dated. The Corolla XSE and XLE offered a nine-speaker JBL system, but the lack of wireless connectivity and advanced tech features was noticeable.

The 2022 Subaru WRX improved its tech offerings with an 11.6-inch touchscreen on Sport trims and higher, featuring Subaru's Starlink system. While the interface had quirks, it was visually impressive. The base trim's dual 7-inch displays were less elegant. The WRX offered an 11-speaker Harman Kardon system on higher trims, enhancing the audio experience.

Safety

2022 Toyota Corolla

9/10

2022 Subaru WRX

5/10

The 2022 Toyota Corolla earned top safety ratings, including an IIHS "Top Safety Pick+" and a five-star NHTSA rating. It featured eight airbags and Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, with standard driver-assist features like forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring was available from the LE trim.

The 2022 Subaru WRX's safety depended on the transmission. CVT models included Subaru's EyeSight suite, offering advanced driver assistance features. Manual models lacked EyeSight due to potential stalling issues. However, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were standard on higher trims. The Subaru Global Platform enhanced crash safety, and the WRX included seven airbags.
