Mercedes opted for a subtle design, avoiding the flashy grilles seen on models like the BMW X7. However, for those seeking a bit more flair, the AMG GLS 63 and Maybach versions offered enhanced visual elements such as flared wheel arches, chrome accents, and larger wheels. Inside, the GLS maintained a luxurious feel with features like leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and ambient lighting, although some might find the interior too subdued. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were well integrated, providing a high-quality feel without being overly delicate.

In contrast, the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport embraced a modernist and reductive design philosophy, focusing on clean and simple lines. While it didn't cater to those seeking maximum attention, it offered options like Firenze Red paint and diamond-turned wheels for a touch of flair. Our test vehicle, in Eiger Grey with silver wheels, exuded understated luxury. Inside, the Range Rover Sport featured a Deep Garnet over Ebony theme with aluminum and shiny black trim. The cabin was equipped with heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a range of luxurious features, although the rear seat was less accommodating for taller passengers. The Range Rover Sport's design included advanced features like premium LED headlights and flush-mounted door handles, contributing to its sleek and aerodynamic profile.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 was powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and the Mercedes EQ Boost mild-hybrid system. This setup delivered 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, with an electric motor providing an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque in short bursts. The GLS 450's inline-six engine offered smooth performance, and the electric assist was seamlessly integrated. However, the air suspension, while capable of adjusting ride height, exhibited poor body control, leading to excessive motion over bumps and in corners. The GLS 450 had a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, which was competitive but not class-leading.
