2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Reviews Summary

Jeep is now a luxury brand. That's why the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L mid-size SUV can ask, with a straight face, that you pay $75,000 or more for the privilege of ownership. A $60,000 Wrangler or a $100,000 Grand Wagoneer doesn't seem snooty, while a Mercedes-Benz or a Lexus sure does. Jeep's heritage as a hardcore 4x4 brand and its newer image as a bougie city truck maker can coexist. We drove a Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve to prove it.

2022 Ford Expedition Reviews Summary

Certain cars garner a surprising amount of attention. While driving a 2022 Ford Expedition Limited in Stone Blue Metallic with one of the Stealth Edition option packages, we received numerous compliments on this SUV, and it was all related to the paint colour and the wheels. Fortunately for Ford, the 2022 Expedition’s beauty is more than skin deep. This is a terrific full-size SUV in all ways but one.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

2022 Ford Expedition

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L was a longer version of the standard two-row Grand Cherokee, extending 29 centimetres to accommodate third-row seating. Its wheelbase stretched an additional 12.7 cm, providing more legroom in the second row and wider rear doors. The design seamlessly integrated the extra length, making the standard Grand Cherokee appear truncated. Jeep's decision to release the L model first, as an all-new 2021 model, contributed to this perception. The Grand Cherokee L maintained Jeep's signature design elements, such as the seven-slot grille and U-shaped wheel arches, while modernizing with slimmer lighting and improved paint finish. The interior was luxurious, featuring high-resolution screens, real wood, and Palermo leather, offering a Mercedes-like quality without shared parts.

In contrast, the 2022 Ford Expedition underwent several updates, including exterior styling revisions and enhanced infotainment technology. The front featured a new grille, headlights, and bumper, while the rear received revised taillights and a new bumper. The Expedition was available in XLT, Limited, and Platinum trims, with standard four-wheel drive in Canada. The Timberline trim catered to off-road enthusiasts with all-terrain tires and suspension modifications. Inside, the Expedition boasted a redesigned dashboard with the new Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems, offering a large touchscreen display. The Limited Stealth Edition featured leather seats and impressive tech, though some materials were reminiscent of the F-150 pickup.

Performance

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

7/10

2022 Ford Expedition

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered two engine options: a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and a 5.7-litre V8, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In Canada, four-wheel drive was standard, with three different systems available. The V6 engine produced 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, which felt insufficient for the vehicle's weight, especially when fully loaded. The V8, available on higher trims, delivered 357 hp and 390 lb-ft, providing a more satisfying performance. Fuel efficiency for the V6 was rated at 13.0 L/100 km city, 9.4 highway, and 11.3 combined, while the V8 was less efficient at 16.7 L/100 km city, 10.9 highway, and 14.1 combined. The Grand Cherokee L excelled in ride composure and steering feel, with an optional air suspension offering adjustable ride heights and driving modes for various terrains.

The 2022 Ford Expedition featured a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, producing 380 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, with higher output available on certain trims. The engine was paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, offering a towing capacity of up to 4,173 kg. Fuel economy ranged from 12.9 to 13.9 L/100 km in combined driving. The Expedition's power delivery was addictive, though fuel consumption increased with aggressive driving. The Stealth Edition's sport-tuned suspension contributed to a sometimes harsh ride, but the adaptive damping suspension on higher trims improved comfort. Despite its size, the Expedition was easy to park, with excellent visibility and parking aids. It excelled on highways, providing a quiet and comfortable ride for long trips.

Form and function

2022 Ford Expedition

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L featured the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, known for its simplicity and sleek graphics. Physical switches for climate and stereo controls were easy to use, with a central rotary shifter and ample storage space. The Laredo and Altitude trims had an 8.4-inch touchscreen, while higher trims offered a 10.1-inch display. The Grand Cherokee L provided generous space in all rows, with captain's chairs standard in the second row. However, the air vents were small, requiring the fan to be on high, which was noisy.

The 2022 Ford Expedition offered exceptional comfort, with available electric running boards for easy access. The interior featured power-adjustable, leather-wrapped, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The second row had heated captain's chairs with climate controls and ample legroom. The third row was easy to access, offering good leg support but limited headroom for taller passengers. Cargo space varied, with 546 litres behind the third row, expandable to 2,961 litres with seats folded. The Expedition Max provided even more cargo capacity.

Technology

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered advanced features on upper trims, including massage modes for front seats, a head-up display, night vision, and a 360-degree camera system. The Active Driving Assist system provided highway steering assistance. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and blind spot monitoring. The Summit trims added automatic parking and traffic sign recognition. The Summit Reserve featured a 19-speaker McIntosh audio system, while lower trims had simpler sound systems.

The 2022 Ford Expedition introduced the Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems, with a 12-inch or optional 15.5-inch touchscreen. Both systems supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with premium sound options available. Sync 4A offered advanced voice recognition and personal profiles. The Expedition's technology had some quirks, such as accidental defroster activation and seatbelt warning interference. The rear-seat entertainment system featured Amazon Fire TV, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0 simplified trailer reversing.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L had not been tested by NHTSA or IIHS. It came standard with driver and passenger knee airbags, trailer sway control, and various driver aids.

The 2022 Ford Expedition offered three Ford Co-Pilot360 packages. The standard package included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ added adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assist. The Platinum trim featured Co-Pilot Assist 2.0, with a surround-view camera and rear automatic emergency braking. The Expedition also offered BlueCruise hands-free driving technology, though lane-centring assist had some issues with accuracy and reliability.
