2022 Ford Explorer Reviews Summary

Two years ago, Ford redesigned its popular Explorer midsize three-row SUV. It moved to a rear-drive platform, added an optional hybrid powertrain, and offered everything from a value-rich base model to a luxurious Platinum trim level. Since then, Ford has added ST-Line and Timberline trim levels while simultaneously honing the Explorer’s packaging to appeal to the broadest cross-section of Canadians possible.

2023 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

The Acura RDX may not be the newest luxury SUV, but it can still compete against newer rivals thanks to its strong performance, high levels of comfort, and relatively affordable price. We're no fans of its infotainment interface, but we think most shoppers will eventually get used to its idiosyncrasies.

Look and feel

2022 Ford Explorer

8/10

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered Canadians a range of six models, with prices starting from $47,799 to $66,759, excluding a $2,095 destination charge. The lineup expanded with the rugged Timberline trim, and the new ST-Line added a sporty flair to the XLT version. The U.S.-spec King Ranch model, not available in Canada, was tested, with the closest Canadian equivalent being the Platinum trim. The Explorer's rear-drive platform allowed for a long, tall hood and a rakish roofline, giving it a taut, athletic look. Blacked-out roof pillars created a "floating roof" effect, popular from previous generations. Inside, higher-trim Explorers mixed quality with some questionable materials, mostly justifying their price but occasionally hinting at the base trim.

The 2023 Acura RDX stood out with its sharp, angular style, though it remained conventional enough to blend in. The signature Acura grille, flanked by sleek wraparound headlights, showed signs of aging. A distinctive character line on the side suggested forward movement, while the rear styling was more conventional. Inside, the RDX featured a vertical cockpit layout, with a centre stack flowing into the console, dominated by gear-selector buttons and a drive-mode dial. The 10.2-inch infotainment display sat atop the dash, with a digital centre display and analog gauges. The interior, while not as modern as some rivals, offered a familiar feel for those averse to new glass cockpits.

Performance

2022 Ford Explorer

9/10

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered three powertrains. The XLT, ST-Line, and Timberline trims featured a turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic and standard 4WD in Canada. It had a towing capacity of 2,400 kg and consumed between 10.3 and 11.8 L/100 km. The Limited trim offered a hybrid drivetrain with a 3.3-litre V6, producing 318 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque, towing up to 2,268 kg, and achieving 9.6 L/100 km. The ST and Platinum trims came with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6, generating 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, towing up to 2,540 kg, and consuming 11.8 L/100 km. The Explorer's ride was robust, handling off-road terrain with ease, and offering an athletic driving experience.

The 2023 Acura RDX was powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. AWD was standard, known as "super-handling all-wheel drive" or "SH-AWD." The RDX accelerated to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, with immediate throttle response and a pleasing engine sound. The transmission was adept at selecting the right gear, and the brake pedal offered reassuring firmness. The RDX's handling inspired confidence, with well-managed body roll and ample traction. The Platinum Elite A-Spec trim featured adaptive dampers, providing a sporty yet comfortable ride.

Form and function

2022 Ford Explorer

7/10

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer provided ample comfort for families of four, with the option to carry five with a second-row bench seat. However, the third-row seat was best suited for children due to limited space. Higher trims offered features like triple-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated second-row captain’s chairs. The front seats were exceptionally comfortable, with available massaging, while the second-row seats were nearly as accommodating. Storage space was limited, with missed opportunities for practical pockets and cubbies. The cargo area offered 528 litres behind the third row, expanding to 1,264 litres with the third row folded, and 2,132 litres with both rear rows down.

The 2023 Acura RDX offered generous front seat space, with additional power adjustments in the top trim. The standard heated and ventilated front seats provided quick comfort, and features like a heated steering wheel and panoramic moonroof were standard. The rear seats accommodated average-sized adults, though taller passengers might find headroom limited. The cargo area offered 835 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,668 litres with the rear seats folded. A deep bin under the cargo floor added versatility. Front passengers had ample storage options, though the centre stack's design took up unnecessary space.

Technology

2022 Ford Explorer

6/10

2023 Acura RDX

4/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer featured two versions of the Sync 3 infotainment system, with an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. The smaller screen was well integrated, while the larger screen seemed like an afterthought. The system included FordPass Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and navigation. Higher trims offered wireless charging, a surround-view camera, and a 14-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system. The older Sync 3 system showed its age, particularly in voice recognition, and a move to Sync 4 was needed. Additional tech included a 12.3-inch digital display and Active Park Assist 2.0.

The 2023 Acura RDX used a touchpad infotainment controller, which was challenging to use, especially while driving. The dashtop display was not a touchscreen and was out of reach. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto improved the experience, allowing for easier operation. The system featured sharp graphics and quick responses but remained one of the least user-friendly interfaces. Standard tech included Bluetooth, SiriusXM, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 16-speaker ELS Studio audio system.

Safety

2022 Ford Explorer

10/10

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, though NHTSA ratings were incomplete. Standard safety features included Ford Co-Pilot360, with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ added adaptive cruise control, lane-centring assist, and evasive steering assist. The system worked well, though steering wheel sensitivity was an issue.

The 2023 Acura RDX received five stars from NHTSA for overall and side crash protection, and four stars for frontal and rollover protection. The IIHS awarded it a Top Safety Pick+. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and parking sensors. The Platinum Elite A-Spec package added a surround-view camera and head-up display. The systems worked well, with smooth adaptive cruise control and some minor issues with lane-keep assist.
