2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Reviews Summary

The summer of 2022 has been a doozy. Gas prices went sky high and heat waves rolled across the country. If you’re rethinking the purchase of a three-row SUV and trying to find a fuel-efficient solution that emits greenhouse gas emissions only part of the time, the seven-passenger Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid might be a good solution. It doesn’t offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as other Pacificas do, but it has a plug-in hybrid powertrain supplying a Natural Resources Canada-rated 51 kilometres of electric range before the gasoline V6 engine fires up to deliver 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

5/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, despite its minivan label, offered a practical solution for families needing space and efficiency. While it didn't boast the rugged appeal of an SUV, it provided the convenience of sliding doors, making it easier to manage in tight parking spaces. The Pacifica Hybrid was unique in its class as a plug-in hybrid minivan, offering a blend of electric and gasoline power. However, its styling was considered somewhat dated, and it wasn't the most affordable option, with prices starting at $55,995 before destination charges. The interior, though comfortable with premium leather, lacked the modern edge seen in some competitors.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior update that might have gone unnoticed by many. The GLE 450e, in particular, stood out with its Twilight Blue metallic finish and 21-inch AMG wheels. Inside, the GLE exuded luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of interior options, ensuring a high-quality cabin experience. The GLE's design and features made it a strong contender in the luxury SUV segment, appealing to those seeking both style and substance.

Performance

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

8/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid was equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 engine paired with a dual-motor electric drive system, delivering a total of 260 horsepower. Its 16-kWh battery allowed for an electric-only range of up to 51 kilometres, making it ideal for short commutes and errands. The Pacifica Hybrid's powertrain was praised for its seamless transition between electric and gasoline modes, and its regenerative braking system helped improve efficiency. However, the driving experience was described as uninspiring, with light steering and unremarkable brakes. Despite this, the Pacifica Hybrid's powertrain was considered a highlight, offering impressive efficiency with an average fuel economy of 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e, on the other hand, featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor, producing 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This power was delivered to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission, allowing the GLE 450e to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. The GLE 450e's fuel economy was rated at 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, with an electric range of 77 kilometres. The transition between gas and electric power was nearly imperceptible, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough roads. The GLE 450e's performance was nearly flawless, offering a quiet and comfortable driving experience.

Form and function

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

9/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid excelled in comfort and utility, offering three rows of comfortable seating and ample cargo space. With 914 litres of cargo space behind the third row and up to 3,978 litres with the second-row seats removed, it provided more storage than many SUVs. The interior featured quality leather upholstery, triple-zone climate control, and a range of storage options. However, the second-row seats needed to be removed to maximize cargo space, which was less convenient than the Stow n’ Go seats in the standard Pacifica.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e offered seating for five, with generous headroom and legroom in both the first and second rows. The cabin felt spacious and airy, thanks to its light upholstery and excellent visibility. Behind the second row, the GLE provided 630 litres of cargo space, which was competitive within its class. The GLE 450e came with a host of comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. While the optional third-row seat was limited to certain trims, the GLE's interior was well-appointed and luxurious.

Technology

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

8/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid featured the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. It offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth pairing for two devices, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The available FamCam system allowed parents to monitor rear-seat passengers, and the optional Harman Kardon sound system provided decent audio quality. However, the voice recognition technology was inconsistent, and the rear-seat entertainment system was deemed unnecessary by some users.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE boasted the MBUX infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch screens. It supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and an improved voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity and convenience. However, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be overly sensitive, leading to unintended volume changes. Overall, the GLE's technology offerings were comprehensive and user-friendly.

Safety

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

8/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid came with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including a rear-seat reminder system, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and lane-keeping assist. However, the adaptive cruise control was criticized for its slow response in certain situations. The Pacifica earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, though its frontal-impact protection received four stars.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a wide range of standard and optional safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. The systems were unobtrusive and effective, providing peace of mind during everyday driving. The GLE received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, though crash tests for the 2024 model were not yet completed.
