2022 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

Though Acura still sells cars, the automaker’s SUVs are the most popular with consumers. The 2022 Acura RDX is the smaller of the company’s two sport-utes, equipped with a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a standard-in-Canada torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, and five trim levels. This year, Acura freshens the 2022 RDX with new styling, a quieter cabin, additional equipment, and refined ride and handling characteristics for some versions.

2023 Audi Q5 Reviews Summary

The 2023 Audi Q5 is an attractive small luxury SUV that is both sporty and comfortable. Its big flaw is sluggish initial acceleration, but otherwise the Q5 feels enjoyable to drive and offers a good amount of technology. The Q5 is also offered in a "coupe-like" Sportback version which doesn't suffer with some of the space sacrifices that rivals do.

Look and feel

2022 Acura RDX

9/10

2023 Audi Q5

7/10

The 2022 Acura RDX presented subtle styling changes inspired by its larger sibling, the MDX. These updates included modifications to the grille surround and front and rear bumper styling, along with new wheel designs and paint colours. The limited-production PMC Edition returned with exclusive Long Beach Blue Pearl paint and an Orchid white interior, named after Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio. The RDX lineup offered a range of trims, from the base model to the A-Spec Platinum Elite and the PMC Edition, with starting prices ranging from $45,800 to $61,500, excluding a $2,375 destination charge. The A-Spec Platinum Elite package, priced at $60,375 in Canada, boasted high-quality interior materials and a quieter cabin, although the new vertical air inlets on the front fascia were not universally loved.

The 2023 Audi Q5 combined subtle curves with angular accents, resulting in a classy yet sporty appearance. It was available in two body styles: the regular SUV and the Q5 Sportback, which featured a sloping rear roofline for a sleeker silhouette. The Sportback's spoiler-like element above the taillights provided a more defined transition from hatch to tail section. Inside, the Q5 offered a refined layout, though its age was beginning to show. Standard features included leather seating and heated front seats, with options for a heated steering wheel and rear seats. The 10-inch touchscreen atop the dash was a departure from the tablet-like screens of competitors, and while materials quality was good, the Q5 no longer felt as special as it once did. The sturdy build quality ensured a quiet ride, free from squeaks and creaks.

Performance

2022 Acura RDX

8/10

2023 Audi Q5

6/10

The 2022 Acura RDX was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder VTEC engine, delivering 272 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 280 pound-feet of torque between 1,600 rpm and 4,500 rpm. This engine provided a lively driving experience, although fuel consumption was higher than the rated 10.3 litres per 100 kilometres, averaging 11.4 L/100 km during testing. A 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters was standard, and the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system was included in Canada, offering impressive torque-vectoring capabilities. The revised Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) and adaptive-damping suspension enhanced the RDX's ride comfort and responsiveness. Despite its engaging driving dynamics, the RDX did not qualify for Acura's Type S performance badge, leaving driving enthusiasts to consider German alternatives.

The 2023 Audi Q5 offered three engine choices. The base 40 TFSI quattro featured a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 201 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. The midrange 45 TFSI quattro increased output to 261 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, while the 55 TFSI e plug-in hybrid delivered 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, with an estimated 37 kilometres of electric-only range. All Q5s came with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard Quattro all-wheel drive. The 45 TFSI engine experienced a noticeable delay in power delivery, affecting initial acceleration. However, the Q5's handling was sporty and confident, with precise steering. The balance between compliance and cornering was well-managed, providing a comfortable ride with minimal noise intrusion.

Form and function

2022 Acura RDX

2023 Audi Q5

7/10

The 2022 Acura RDX, despite being a compact SUV, offered ample room for four adults and their luggage, with a standard panoramic sunroof. The interior featured a sporty driving position and a unique control layout, including the True Touchpad Interface infotainment system. The 12-way power-adjustable and heated front seats were comfortable, while the back seat lacked support. The RDX provided 835 litres of cargo space, expandable to 1,668 litres with the rear seats folded.

The 2023 Audi Q5's interior design had remained largely unchanged since 2018 but continued to impress with its functionality. The infotainment touchscreen was positioned for easy visibility, and traditional controls were provided for climate settings. The Q5 offered good outward visibility and ample space for passengers, even in the Sportback model. Storage options were available, though some were oddly sized. The Q5 provided 730 litres of cargo space, slightly reduced in the Sportback, but still competitive within its class.

2023 Audi Q5

The 2022 Acura RDX featured the True Touchpad Interface (TTI) infotainment system, which required a learning curve due to its unique touchpad-to-screen relationship. Despite its complexity, the system included Amazon Alexa Built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad. The RDX offered three premium sound systems, with the top-tier ELS Studio 3D surround-sound audio system featuring 16 speakers.

The 2023 Audi Q5 came standard with a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, offering sharp graphics and quick responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available, along with Bluetooth and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims included a Bang & Olufsen audio system. The Q5 could be monitored remotely via a smartphone app, and mid-range trims featured a customizable digital instrument panel known as the virtual cockpit.

The 2022 Acura RDX received structural upgrades for improved side-impact safety, earning a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features included AcuraWatch driver-assist systems, with additional features available in higher trims. However, the adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist systems were not as refined as some competitors.

The 2023 Audi Q5 achieved five-star ratings from the NHTSA for overall, frontal, and side protection, and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. Higher trims added advanced features such as lane-keep assist, a surround-view camera system, and matrix-design LED headlights.
