2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

Redesigned for 2020, the GLE is a midsize luxury SUV in every traditional sense. But because Mercedes-Benz has way too much time and money to develop cars, the newest GLE has comfort and technology that border on ridiculous. The GLE Coupe models are brand-new for 2021 and among the strangest vehicles on the planet. Among the eight variants of this big Benz, at least one might fit your lifestyle, if not your budget.

2022 BMW X3 Reviews Summary

Since its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only manufacturing facility north of the Mexican border. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that.

Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Updates include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features. (Interestingly, while the BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup in the United States, it continues in 2022 in Canada. This model is not covered in this review.)

Look and feel

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE

6/10

2022 BMW X3

7/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE was a vehicle that, while adequate in appearance, did not quite capture the stunning allure of its sedan and sports car siblings. Its exterior design, reminiscent of a hurried assignment, featured an aggressive nose and sloping hood that promised more than it delivered past the A-pillar. Despite efforts to enhance its rear with flat taillights and a contoured design, the GLE struggled to match the pitch-perfect proportions of competitors like BMW, Audi, and Jaguar. In AMG trim, the GLE attempted a sporty look but fell short when compared to rivals such as the BMW X5 M and Porsche Cayenne Turbo. However, the interior of the GLE was a different story, showcasing a masterpiece of quality, layout, and textures. The red and black interior was both bold and luxurious, with features like twin arching grab handles and a mix of wood, metal, leather, and suede upholstery that elevated the cabin experience.

In contrast, the 2022 BMW X3 presented a more aggressive exterior design with a slightly larger kidney grille and adaptive full LED headlights. The rear featured new taillights with a black surround and pincer claw-shaped brake light LEDs, adding a modern touch. The X3 offered a variety of exterior updates, including an M Sport Package for xDrive30i models, specialized aero wheels, and new paint options. Inside, the X3's cabin was clean and efficient, with a well-appointed interior that included wood trim, power-adjustable front seats, and tri-zone automatic climate control. The X3's interior colour choices and ambient lighting added to its appeal, while the redesigned centre console and larger infotainment system improved ergonomics and accessibility.

Performance

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE

10/10

2022 BMW X3

7/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE excelled as a versatile SUV, offering a range of suspension configurations and turbocharged engines. The base GLE 350 featured a 255 hp engine, while the GLE 450 boasted a 362 hp turbo 3.0-litre inline-6. The AMG GLE 53 took performance further with a 429 hp engine and an electric supercharger for instant throttle response. The GLE's hybrid system, known as EQ Boost, provided additional power and improved engine efficiency, though it did not significantly enhance fuel economy. The GLE's driving experience was exceptional, with a smooth ride, precise steering, and impressive towing capacity of up to 3,500 kilograms.

The 2022 BMW X3 offered an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the xDrive30i, producing 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The X3 M40i featured a more powerful 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, along with a mild-hybrid system. The M40i's performance was notable, with a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds and enhanced driving dynamics. The X3's AWD system and adaptive suspension provided a balanced driving experience, while the mild-hybrid system offered additional power without improving fuel efficiency.

Form and function

2022 BMW X3

7/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered spacious two-row seating, with an optional third row for seven passengers. The SUV provided 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, expanding to 2,055 litres with all rows folded. The Coupe variant had slightly less cargo capacity due to its sloping roofline. The GLE's MBUX infotainment system improved usability, with a touchpad interface and easy-to-use controls for suspension and driving modes.

The 2022 BMW X3 accommodated five passengers comfortably, with a 40/20/40-split rear seat and ample cargo space for luggage and equipment. The X3's power tailgate and optional hands-free opening added convenience. The SensaTec seats were comfortable, with the option to upgrade to Vernasca leather for added luxury. The X3's redesigned centre console and larger infotainment system improved ergonomics, while the sport seats provided excellent support.

The system included a Track Pace app for AMG models, seat kinetics, and a natural voice assistant. The GLE's head-up display and ambient lighting offered customization options, while the navigation system provided augmented reality directions. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration enhanced connectivity.

The 2022 BMW X3 came with BMW Live Cockpit Plus, featuring a 10.25-inch infotainment screen and a 5.1-inch instrument panel. The system included navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a range of connected services. An optional Live Cockpit Professional upgraded both screens to 12.3 inches. The X3's standard sound system could be upgraded to a Harman Kardon surround sound system, while additional tech options included a panoramic sunroof and gesture control.

The 2022 BMW X3 earned a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA, with standard features like adaptive LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning. The X3's available parking assistance and active safety systems provided additional protection, while optional features like traffic jam assistance and active lane-keep assist enhanced safety.
