2021 Honda CR-V Reviews Summary

Even in a grim year, Honda is selling a staggering number of CR-Vs. The CR-V is the best-selling Honda in Canada, edging out the home-built Honda Civic. The CR-V is also the second best-selling compact SUV, just behind the Toyota RAV4. And it was the sixth best-selling vehicle in Canada in 2021.

So, it’s hard to argue against the CR-V formula. Honda’s been at this almost as long as crossovers have been a thing, launching the CR-V in 1997—a year after the RAV4 debuted.

The funny thing is, aside from sales volume, there’s only one thing the CR-V particularly excels at. Aesthetics are subjective, but it would be hard to argue the CR-V is the best-looking vehicle in its class. It’s not the cheapest. It’s not the best equipped, especially at the middle to lower trim levels. It’s not the fastest, nor is it the quietest, or the most fuel efficient. It’s not even the most reliable, showing up nowhere in J.D. Power's Most Reliable list.

So, what makes it so appealing to Canadian consumers? Let’s see if we can figure that out.

2022 Buick Encore GX Reviews Summary

The Encore GX small SUV debuted for the 2020 model year, slotting in just above the best-selling Encore subcompact crossover and below the Envision in Buick's four-SUV lineup. Other than four new extra-cost exterior paint colours, the 2022 Encore GX is a complete carryover from 2021.

Look and feel

2021 Honda CR-V

6/10

2022 Buick Encore GX

8/10

The 2021 Honda CR-V, while functional, did not stand out in the crowded compact crossover market. Its design was similar to many of its competitors, with only minor details like the grille and some chromed plastic features setting it apart. Colour options were limited, with a predominance of neutral shades, making it challenging to find more vibrant hues like Radiant Red. Inside, the CR-V offered a modern look with angular seat designs and a choice of materials depending on the trim level. However, competitors like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson offered more distinctive styling, especially in mid-tier trims.

In contrast, the 2022 Buick Encore GX presented a more refined appearance, especially with the optional ST package that added sporty elements like custom grilles and 18-inch aluminum wheels. The Encore GX shared a family resemblance with the smaller Encore but had a slightly longer wheelbase, giving it a less stubby look. Inside, the Encore GX featured a cabin with soft-touch materials and a mix of cloth and leather upholstery, depending on the trim. The interior was user-friendly, with controls that were easy to operate, although rear-seat space was a bit tight for three adults. Overall, the Encore GX offered a handsome design with practical features.

Performance

2021 Honda CR-V

6/10

2022 Buick Encore GX

5/10

The 2021 Honda CR-V was equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 190 horsepower. It delivered smooth and steady acceleration, taking about 8 seconds to reach 100 km/h. While not the fastest in its class, it was competitive with other crossovers. The CR-V's continuously variable transmission (CVT) provided a consistent driving experience, though it lacked the engagement of traditional automatic transmissions found in rivals like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson. The CR-V offered front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available on higher trims, similar to most competitors.

The 2022 Buick Encore GX, available in Canada with a 1.3-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, produced 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, the Encore GX offered adequate power for highway merging and city driving. However, the engine was a bit noisy, and the ride was less refined than expected from a Buick. Despite Buick's QuietTuning technology, noise levels were higher than anticipated. The Encore GX's driving dynamics were uninspiring, but it handled everyday driving tasks competently.

Form and function

2021 Honda CR-V

8/10

2022 Buick Encore GX

8/10

The 2021 Honda CR-V prioritized functionality, offering ample space for five passengers and their gear. It boasted over 100 litres more interior volume than the Toyota RAV4 and provided 1,065 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded. Depending on the trim, the CR-V featured manual, power, or hands-free tailgate options, enhancing convenience. Roof rails were standard on most trims, adding versatility for carrying additional cargo.

The 2022 Buick Encore GX, while compact, provided a comfortable experience for front-seat passengers, with adequate headroom and legroom. Rear-seat space was tighter, making it less ideal for three adults. The Encore GX offered 665 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats and 1,422 litres with them folded. It featured a two-level cargo floor for added flexibility. The optional hands-free power liftgate and adjustable height settings improved accessibility, catering to a range of users.

Technology

The 2021 Honda CR-V came standard with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, supporting Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims offered enhanced audio systems, with the Touring trim featuring a 300-watt setup with a subwoofer. Charging ports were plentiful, with USB and 12-volt outlets throughout the cabin. The Touring trim also included a wireless phone charger.

The 2022 Buick Encore GX offered an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Navigation was available on higher trims, and the tech package included advanced features like HD surround vision and a head-up display. The Convenience package added wireless phone charging and automatic parking assist. The Encore GX's infotainment system was intuitive, with easy Bluetooth pairing and efficient voice recognition.

The 2022 Buick Encore GX also performed well in safety tests, receiving a five-star NHTSA rating and "Good" ratings from the IIHS. It offered standard driver assistance features, with options for additional safety technologies. The Encore GX included Teen Driver technology and a tire-fill alert system.
