2023 Buick Encore GX Reviews Summary

General Motors has big plans for Buick. The near-luxury division positioned between Chevrolet and Cadillac is slated to go all-electric by the end of the decade, with a fresh lineup of EVs highlighted by a new design language. But those new models aren’t scheduled to arrive for a few more years, so for now Buick carries on with a lineup of conventional gasoline crossover SUVs, of which the 2023 Buick Encore GX is the entry-level option.

The Encore GX was launched for the 2020 model year as a larger sibling to the Buick Encore, but the standard Encore is being discontinued, leaving only the GX for 2023. It slots below the Envision and Enclave in Buick’s three-model crossover lineup.

While Buick is generally considered a step up from mainstream brands, the Encore GX’s size and pricing are more in line with subcompact SUVs from mainstream brands, such as the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30, or the lifted-hatchback Subaru Crosstrek. In fact, the Encore GX shares powertrains and a basic platform with one of these vehicles—the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The only change for 2023 is a new extra-cost Moonstone Gray Metallic paint option. That means the lineup still consists of base Preferred, mid-level Select, and top Essence trim levels. We tested out an Encore GX Essence for this review.

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s SUVs with body-on-frame construction appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road and do in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favour for anyone not enamoured by a V8 growl.

Look and feel

2023 Buick Encore GX

5/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX did not carry forward the brand's historical design flair, such as the iconic portholes, opting instead for a modern look that seemed to lack direction. Its rounded exterior and tall stance resulted in awkward proportions that failed to capture the SUV appeal that has become popular among buyers. Even with the Sport Touring Package, which added subtle enhancements like a black mesh grille with red inserts and 18-inch wheels, the changes were barely noticeable unless compared directly with a standard model. Inside, the Encore GX Essence trim offered expected features like leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control, but the abundance of plastic reminded us of its position at the lower end of Buick's lineup. The interior design, with its blob-like dashboard, evoked memories of uninspired 1990s automotive design, though the instrument cluster stood out with its well-framed digital display.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus GX presented a bold visual presence with its massive spindle grille and significant ground clearance. The Black Line Special Edition added exclusivity with limited units and unique paint options. Despite its imposing front, the GX's dimensions seemed to shrink along the sides, with a short wheelbase and minimal overhangs, emphasizing its off-road capabilities. The interior, while luxurious with features like heated and cooled seats and leather upholstery, was marred by an unexpected amount of plastic, reflecting its low sales volume and the need for cost-effective manufacturing. The GX's design, though not as blocky as other Toyota models, leaned towards a sleeker aesthetic, making it easier to navigate technical terrains.

Performance

2023 Buick Encore GX

5/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX in Canada came equipped with a 1.3-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Despite its modest specs, the Encore GX's acceleration felt stronger than anticipated, though power delivery was not always smooth due to the turbocharger and transmission dynamics. The ride quality was a highlight, with a well-damped suspension and active noise cancellation contributing to a comfortable and quiet cabin experience. However, the Encore GX's driving dynamics were less impressive, with slow steering and significant body roll detracting from its overall performance.

The 2023 Lexus GX, powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine, delivered 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. While not the most powerful on paper, the V8 provided a satisfying linear power delivery and a distinctive engine note. The GX's towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms was respectable, though not class-leading, and its fuel economy was typical of a V8 engine. The GX's weight contributed to noticeable body roll, but its handling remained predictable and controllable. The vehicle's driving dynamics were enhanced by a Torsen limited-slip differential and a robust 4WD system, making it adept at handling various terrains.

Form and function

2023 Buick Encore GX

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX offered competitive passenger space, with headroom comparable to rivals like the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30. However, the Kia Seltos provided more rear legroom and cargo space. The Encore GX's cargo capacity was respectable, with 665 litres behind the rear seats and 1,422 litres with them folded. The interior layout had some drawbacks, such as closely positioned front seats and limited comfort due to insufficient thigh support. Despite these issues, Buick maximized small-item storage with large door pockets and a space-efficient wireless charging pad. The instrumentation was well-executed, with clear notifications and an array of hard buttons for ease of use.

The 2023 Lexus GX excelled in small-item storage, with a deep centre console bin and conveniently placed cupholders. The decision to retain hard buttons over haptic-touch interfaces was a practical choice, though the abundance of controls required familiarization. The centre console lid's adjustable sliding mechanism was a thoughtful feature, accommodating different-sized occupants. The second row offered comfort with captain's chairs and adequate legroom, while the third row was too tight for regular use. The GX's cargo space was limited, with only 328 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,832 litres with both rear rows folded, which was less than a Toyota RAV4.

Technology

2023 Buick Encore GX

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX featured a standard 8-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch driver information display, with optional navigation, head-up display, and Bose audio system. Standard tech included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and SiriusXM. The infotainment system, shared with other GM vehicles, was user-friendly with clear graphics, though the screen size was modest by current standards.

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, updated in 2022, already felt dated compared to other Lexus models. The 10.3-inch touchscreen was an improvement, offering standard features like SiriusXM, Bluetooth, and smartphone compatibility. The Lexus Remote Touch Interface was rendered unnecessary by the touchscreen. Despite these updates, the system lagged behind newer Lexus models in terms of graphics and responsiveness. The GX's tech strengths lay in its off-road capabilities, with a comprehensive 4WD system and features like KDSS and multi-terrain select.

Safety

2023 Buick Encore GX

9/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX came with standard driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and a Teen Driver system. Optional features included adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera system. The Encore GX received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and was an IIHS 2022 Top Safety Pick, though child-seat anchor ease of use was rated lower.

The 2023 Lexus GX had not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, but it included the Lexus Safety System+ with features like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control. Despite its older design, the GX's safety tech was up-to-date, though it lacked some advanced features found in newer models.
