This is a car for people who are into DRIVING. Mine has the manual tranny - I LOVE listening to the engine (located right behind ya) respond to the accelerator and gear changes, and the mid-engine configuration really shows its stuff. Such a SHAME that Toyota continues to stonewall about the pre-cat issue.Sep 08, 2013

As an older guy now in my '60's, I've owned my fair share of sports cars. In high school my sister and I jointly purchased a 1961 Triumph TR3; our first real sports car. I've owned an MGB (unfortunately), a TR6-GT, a Saab Sonnet and a Datsun 2000 Roadster.
I purchased my MR2 Spyder 2 years ago and it now has a little over 70,000 miles on the odometer. The original owner took very good care of the car following the scheduled maintenance and changing oil every 3,000 miles. God bless this man.
I drove the car home from San Francisco to where we live on the Southern California coast- what a beautiful drive! Top down, awesome response and handling, great fuel economy and...people's reaction to the car was amazing. I actually bought the car because I knew it was a reliable Toyota product that was fun, fast and economical, but I never expected the reaction I received at almost every stop.
And I want to say this about the storage problem most people are concerned with. My wife and I traveled from Santa Barbara to Portland and back and never had a problem with storage- we even packed food for our picnics. It requires some forethought, but after living out of a Westfalia camper during our kid's surf careers; packing our MR2 was easy- we simply utilized the space available- problem solved!
This car is absolutely the very best car I've ever owed. After two years and many trips around the West Coast I still hear myself saying - God, I love this car... and I do!Feb 18, 2013

The MR2 was very reliable and looked great with it's mini supercar looks. The hanling was excellent, but could be a little twitchy in the wet around English country roads, which added to the fun for better driver, how ever you need the tracking and tyres to be spot on all the time is this really makes a difference to how the car drives, much more than in most cars. The acceleration is lively and the free-revving engine sweet joy. The build quality is excellent, but if you need the handbrake cable renewed half the interior has to come out so beware .Love the racey interior styling, but hard plastics could be improved to add a quality feel. No squeeks or rattles with this well made roadster. The light weight body with it's Boxter-esk styling aid economy. General cost of ownership is very cheap, unless you have issues with the handbrake like I did.
Too summarise the MR2 provides unparalleled fun on a budget. Loved it.Nov 12, 2011

The Only one light weight mid ship convertable made in Japan. The sequential shift is good try but bad result. Still fun to drive if you're just out there for fun country road driving. Just don't expect sport peformance. Plus, the top has to be come off manually which can be a drag with sudden rainfall. But thats what keep it light so so much for that.Sep 29, 2009

Stunner, drives like a go-kart which is fantastic. Turns on a penny. MPG is ok, but not great, but then who cares! I've tuned it up so acceleration and handling are second to none, even though the standard model was amazing anyway. The cosmetics of the car are beautiful, sporty looking, inpractical with regards to storage but I don't care this is a great car to drive and own. Cost of ownership so far hasn't been to bad, new brake discs recently but overall it has been excellent.Jun 16, 2009

violent fun....good acceleration and braking as well.needs almost perfect driving skills to handle as it is not that heavy for it's hp (something not in my ''possession'' yet...practise makes better!!).In terms of build quality and repairs, TOYOTA is the answer...An extreme ''money-saver'' as far as the ration gas/milage and cost of maintenance is concerned! An advise,TRY NOT TO BREAK IT!EVER!Done it already once...!!!!hhahahahahaSep 08, 2008

Where do I start... The mid engined convertible was purchased to recover from my mid-life crisis. I needed something outrageous but still affordable. The car had to sacrifice the trunk so that wheel base can be larger for balanced handling - great stuff, all the wrong reason to buy the car. The tiptronic gearbox was great until I thrash the hell out of it on race tracks, skidpans and winding mountain roads... so I sold it before major 80,000km service and replacing parts on the sequential gearbox. I've done everything that I needed to do with the car, including AFL parade, club runs and track days. I would buy another one if I have more room in the garage.Jul 31, 2008

Acceleration is ok, handling is superb. Few rattles with the hard top on, no repairs done. Leather has worn (show me leather that hasen't). MPG is rubbish, as always tho...depends how you drive it! I'v got a heavy foot! Loads of fun a cute, sexy little car. Drives like a train on tracks, stick to road amazingly. looking into turboing it...when i win the lottery!!!
Would recommend the car to any girl that wanna look good, MUST be able to drive well, and wanna have fun in the rain as arse end very happy in wet (or damp if your gooood!)!!!
LOADS OF FUN FUN FUN !!! xxxJul 23, 2008

This is possibly one of the most fun vehicles I've ever owned. While it might not be the fastest thing on four wheels, it's certainly one of the most fun. The handling and the feedback through the wheel are superb. It's appearance is either love it or hate it; I've never seen someone be neutral about it's looks. Toyota quality is still in full effect for this vehicle, plus it has a fuel efficient 32/28 city/highway mpg.Jul 06, 2008

Never thought much of these cars before, regularly telling people not to touch them... I now feel guilty because the second I drove it, I thoroughly enjoyed it and made me want one immediately.

toyota reliability, better than boxster stying, economical, reliable, great handling, good mileage....too little storage - from a storage point of view my '79 X1/9 was MUCH better - this IS a design flaw -need I say more...it's a motorcycle with a roof and a stereoMay 08, 2008

This car is always great fun to drive, with a responsive engine and great handling - it will humble many more expensive cars around the twisty bits. Hardtop does make winter in England more bearable, and stops damage to the soft top when used (mine has been slashed in the past).
It is also very good over speed bumps - no slowing down is needed - although even with really good suspension there is scuttle-shake when driving over London pot-holes.Mar 03, 2008

This car is awesome for me, handling, reliable, tiny engine, 33mpg, fast. It is easy to slide around corners and still maintain control. The best part is that it is made for shorter drivers, and I am 5-7. Jan 17, 2008
