It has been a great vehicle for long road trips. But, I am at a decision-point with the Passat having 287,000 miles on it and a newly cracked and leaking radiator with a front end package of $1,700 to 2,000 - the repair cost being more than book value I would think. And how much more "life" would be left in a vehicle that has had very regular and thorough car by very good independent garages? My household has three vehicles and the Passat is the extra more or less, but owned solely by me.
UPDATE: I found Lou's garage on the Boonsboro Road just outside of Lynchburg, VA and he and his crew did the work on replacing the cracked radiator, water pump (probable cause) and some other items for about $1100. The car runs fine and on one trip it got up to 37 MPG. I am very happy I found Lou's garage and I did not have to make the car donation!Nov 14, 2014

it was a great car to have around everyone in the neighborhood use to give me thumbs up , it was a very cool car and it has great exhaust sound . Ilove it only reason why im selling it is because i bought a new oneOct 09, 2012

A nice car. Reasonable comfortable, good handling, spacious. The 125 hp 1,8
without turbo is a bit of a bore though. Noisy, no spunk and a pretty heavy
drinker.
If you decide to buy one you should make sure that the links in the front chassi has
been replaced with better stuff than the original ones. If you don't chances are

nice overall looking car
nice thrill when you race it,people do not expect much from a passat but not all are diesel

Accelration is awesome, braking is also awesome, soft suspension so cornering is not as fast as it could go, but still quick enough to beat my mates in corollas and pulsars.
Slight dent, but I want to get that out.
As a student, it is cheap as to run. Make it 2 weeks on 50L of 98 unleaded.
This car is so much fun, quick from 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Never floored it in 4th, but hoping to go to a racetrack and try it out there.Jun 03, 2010

Performance - nice acceleration and power (good turbo)
Build Quality - turbo and transmission problems
Appearance - innovative exterior and very nice interior. The purple and red lights look good.
Cost of Ownership - regular maintenance very expensive. It is very efficient with the gas consumption.Nov 29, 2009

It has a 150 hp 1.8 turbo engine.yeah i love my car.It can accelerate to 100 km less than 8.5 seconds.It's a veryy gun tu drive.Thank you.IT is a very high quality carMy daddy oened it for 2 years (2003-2005) even it was already 5 y.o. when we bought it we didn't go to service unless it was time to periodic maintence.It's really a masterpiece-both interior and exterior.-Ergonomy is excellent everything is at a place where they should be.It has relatively low fuel consumption.But of course it has a higher cost of ownership than a 1.4 liter car.But it has nearly no cost of maintence.I guess this car won't need a high cost operation even it's 10 years old.Nov 15, 2009

Very solid car, German engineering is outstanding even in the older models. Handling could be more solid and braking could be more responsive. This can be fixed with suspension and brake upgrades. This car is very fun to drive, especially with the chip upgrade for the turbo. Very quick.Nov 12, 2009

Nice looking car. I've owned mine for just under 2 years now and never had any problems with it.
It's the first car I've owned so the insurance was very expensive, though it's gone down quite a bit now I have 1 years no claims.
It accelerates pretty quickly and is quite economical for the size of the car. I've used it for towing too, it can tow my 2 motorbike trailer with no problems. Jun 30, 2009

A cheap car that drives like a very expensive one. Reasonable performance, suprising economy and superb comfort. No rust or blemishes, paint quality is very very good. You would not believe this a 100k miles car. My best Ebay purchase ever.Jun 24, 2009

its a solid car as long as you keep it up and keep turbo approved oil in it. gas millage is great for this size car but it only takes 93 so its varys in prices. overall a great first car for anybody.Jun 11, 2009

Nice looking both outside and from the inside. The trunk is amazing, holds everything one family with a small kid could possibly toss in, but the 1.6 petrol engine is quite unsuitable for anything but barely moving from point A to point B, so to say.Jan 28, 2009

BEAUTIFUL! One of the best cars I have ever been in. The leather was beautiful. The dash, shifter, the engine, the trunk space. I mean, what is there not to like about it? The car is the Passat of the century. Better than today's, and yesteryear's VW PASSATS. I highly recommend it.Aug 02, 2008

When I bought the car, it was the first of the B5 platform. It had excellent driving reviews. I considered this versus the Honda Accord Coupe. I went for the VW because it was so mujch cooler looking. Since this was my first car purchase, I pretty much got it for the looks I walked into the dealership and bought the floor model. It is Colorado Red with tan leather and I also got the 5 disc changer. It's a 5 speed manual 1.8L Turbo because I always wanted to drive stick. I babied the car. Hand waxed it twice a year. And hand washed it frequently. It lived in NJ, PA, MO, and now resides in CA. I still drive the car and have been attempting to do my own maintenance which has saved me some money. But overall, it has cost me a lot to repair since most garages in Bakersfield do not service the car with confidence so I take it to the dealership. It has 145000 miles on it. I am probably going to drive this car to its death.Apr 12, 2008
